Field-trial design for an investigation of trip re-routing behaviour in response to road-use pricing

This paper describes the development of a field-trial which aims to gather information on drivers' trip re-roting responses to a range of road-use pricing regimes。 Volunteers' vehicles are to be fitted with automatic debiting equipment linked to Global Positioning System (GPS) technology for the purposes of tracking vehicles and recording relevant details of volunteers' commuter journeys。 Volunteers are allocated a personal travel-buget which is programmed into their on-board account。 The incentive for drivers to reconsider carefully their preferred route for a particular journey is provided by the knowledge that any credit remaining in their account at the end of the experiment may be retained。
