The need for the protection and exploitation of oilseed plants in nigeria

Oilseed plants play an important role in the economic development of a nation. In Nigeria, however, non-exploitation of rare and neglected oilseed plants has resulted to low vegetable oil intake and lack of adequate raw-material for lipid-based industries. These neglected oilseed plants are at the point of extinction because of either deforestation or lack of their valorization for nutritional and other industrial purposes. Our studies have therefore been on exploiting and exploring these neglected oilseed plants for nutritional and industrial purposes. One of the plants that has been studied more extensively is the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis). The rubber seed is a good source of oil and the oil has been utilized for the production of alkyd resin, emulsifier, putty and other industrial products that are usually obtained with any vegetable oil. The oil was extracted and refined before use. The extraction methods used included solvent extraction and screw press/expeller extraction. A combination of screw press and solvent extraction was also used. The rubber seed oil was suitable for the production of; alkyd resin which was used in compounding paint, emulsifier and putty because of its fatty acid profile which revealed high concentrations of oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids.
