The acridine dyes are derived from acridine (liniar dibenzopyridine) which is found in coal tar, or it can be synthesised by condensing diphenylamines with MCOOH or C_2O_4H_2 in the presence of ZnCl_2。 These dyes have amino, dimethylamino or, less frequently, diethylamino groups in positions 3 and 6 in the molecule, having the role of auxocroms。
