Filament winding is an automated fabrication technique for producing composite structures, where fibers are wound onto a rotating tool, or mandrel。 In this paper, algorithms for calculating a controlled and synchronized motion of the payout head with 2 degrees of freedom and rotating mandrel axis are derived, given the mandrel geometry, the winding pattern and production time。 The kinematics and dynamics of all movements, as well as the trajectory of the pay-out head are strongly affected by the relative distance between the pay-out eye and the tow separation point on the mandrel surface, i。e。 the free-running length of tow。 In this paper, kinematics analyses of a filament winding machine are performed, for three different algorithms for calculation the free-running length of tow。 Based on the velocities and accelerations attained, as well as on some experimental tests, recommendations for selecting an optimal motion algorithm are given。
