Xinhua District of Pingdingshan City, Henan Province, is one of China national key coal production counties (or districts)。 Their production capacities are more than 0。6 million tons per year。 The minefields of small collieries generally are situated in the shallowly buried and abandoned mining levels of large collieries, Pingdingshan Coal Group。 They mainly mine the remained pillars and bottom coal seams whose thick seams have been mined by large collieries。 Since affected by ones, two or many times mining activities, the integral and continuous properties of surround rocks in the coal seam roof and floor are subjected to damages in different degree。 Because the roof of second mining seam is broken rocks or in caved zone, the accidents of roof fall are often occurred in roadways。 Experiencing nearly 20 years production practice, small collieries in Xinhua District have been developing the room and pillar mining method with some character。 The authors systematically sum up the layout of gateway and winning technology of this mining method。 Finally, according to main problems occurred in small collieries' production at present, the authors put forward technical measures of improving mining methods, in line with laws and regulations of Chinese government Small collieries are important parts of Chinese coal industry。 The conclusions are of significance for small collieries' healthily developing, promoting their changes from quantity type to quality type and advancing local economy。
