The Composition of Street-Bin Litter and its Recycling Potential

扫码查看
The purpose of this research paper was to determine the composition of waste within the litter bins sited in a rural Town Centre environment。 From a compositional analysis of the litter bin waste, it was determined that there was a significant proportion of key recyclables and thus scope to actively promote the street segregation of key recyclables, namely selected metals, paper and plastics。 The litter bin analysis also indicated differences in the composition and weights of waste collected between days and events (such as market and non-market days)。 The street segregation of key recyclables from the litter bins was facilitated through the purchase and placement of split bodied litter bins, which was determined by the results of the compositional analysis。 The recycling infrastructure was accompanied by a promotional campaign。 Monitoring of the quantity and quality of the recyclables from the split bodied litter bins has indicated that the scheme can potentially divert up to 4。5 tonnes per annum of dry-recyclate from a single High Street location。
