Five rice genotypes (conventional indica, hybrid indica, conventional japonica, hybrid japonica and upland rice) were applied to investigate the cortical aerenchyma formation of roots under the conditions of different medium pH (4。5 and 6。5) and different N resources (ammonium and nitrate) through the paraffin section technique。 Results indicated that cortical aerenchyma tended to form in roots of indica rice seedlings at low pH when NH_4~+-N was the sole N resource while in roots of japonica rice and upland rice seedlings at near neutral pH when NO_3~--N was supplied alone。
