An adequate supply of sulphur (S) is important for optimum cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) growth and yield formation. A better understanding of the effect of S on plant growth and development will help improve S fertilizer recommendations. Cotton acreage and yield in Xinjiang Province has increased in the past ten years and there is a need for recent data on cotton response to S fertilization. Treatments included N_(330)P_(60), N_(330)P_(60)S_(30) and N_(391.5)P_(90)K_(37.5)S_(15.5). Sources were applied with and without additional sidedress. Times of N fertilizer application were preplant, early flowering stage, and full flowering stage. The results showed that susceptibility of cotton fruiting forms (squares and bolls) to abscission rate is age-dependent. The total rate of abscission reached 70%, and the boll shedding rate was higher than that of square, after flower opening, the abscission probability peaked and then decreased rapidly The abscission rate after topdressing was higher than before topdressing. Under our field study conditions, application of sulphur fertilizer had no effect on the percent shedding ratio of square or boll, but increased the retentive number of boll and the lint yield by 15% and 16%, respectively. The boll retention rate (%) of N_(391.5)P_(90)K_(37.5)S_(15.5) or N_(330)P_(60)S_(30) was higher than N_(330)P_(60) by 35% and 24%, respectively. Taken together, the results suggested that S application would optimize cotton nutrition and increase the final yield.
