By the year 2031~32 power generation capacity of India would have to increase to 778 095 MW and annual coal requirement would be 2 040 million tones。 Thermal coal, which is the mainstay of India's power generation, contains as high as 50% ash。 To meet the rapidly growing demand for thermal power, the transportation facilities need expanding。 Major routes of Indian Railways are currently saturated。 Creation of transport infrastructure is expensive。 It is known that washing of coal improves its quality and consistency。 The present work examines the effect of coal washing on thermal coal transportation by railways and finds that it would considerably improve the rake loading capacity, possibly their life and also "release" carrying capacity on the saturated rail network。
