Fabrication of Photonic Crystal Without Pearly Coloring by PMMA Particles Embedded with Nigrosine

Shuichi Kinoshita and co-works found that one of male Morpho butterflies， M。 sulkowskyi， has a pearly white， glossy wing， while the other one， M。 rhetenor， displays brilliant wing though their wings' microscopic lamellar structures are similar to each other。 This difference comes from the absorption of the green to red light and enhancement of the contrast of blue coloring in the presence of the pigment， melanin， which M。 sulkowskyi wings do not have。 Here we simulated Morpho wings containing melanin to embed nigrosine into PMMA nanoparticles， and gained opal films and photonic beads having more pure color tones。
