After investigations on cold welding behaviour of (bulk) quasicrystals and approximants [1] [2], quasicrystal coatings were prepared and assed by fretting tests under vacuum。 These coatings were deposited at different thicknesses, using various PVD processes, by the partners of this study。 These thin and thick coatings were made of Al-Cu-Fe, with the nominal composition of the icosahedral phases Al62。5Gu25Fe12。5 for thin coatings and Al60。5Cu26。8Fe12。7 for thick coatings。 The thin coatings on steel substrates do not resist under fretting, that is why thick coatings have been prepared: these thick icosahedral coatings exhibit the absence of cold-welding in vacuum versus space steels A286。 These anti-fretting coatings could have possible applications for stainless steels: studies showed that thin coatings (TiN, …) do not resist fretting tests [9]。
