Degradation of Methylene Blue Solution Using Activated Carbon Fiber Immobilized TiO2 Composite Catalyst Prepared with a Dip-Coating Method

Activated carbon fiber immobilized TiO2 composite catalyst (TiO2/ACF) was prepared with a dip-coating method by using commercial TiO2 powder. A batch fixed bed photoreactor with a volume of 5.4 l was set up to evaluate photocatalytic efficiency in degrading methylene blue (MB) solution. The results showed that the carbonization of coated organic binder was significant to develop loose structure of TiO2 layer and to keep original space between neighboring fibers. So a three-dimensional photocatalytic environment was formed. The photodegradation of MB followed a pseudo-first-order reaction kinetic law. The obtained apparent reaction constant kapp was larger than 0.047 min-1 with half reaction time shorter than 15 min, which was comparable to reported data in using suspended Degussa P-25 TiO2. The TiO2/ACF appeared the highest photocatalytic activity as loaded TiO2 amount increased to 400-500 mg TiO2/1g ACF. The photocatalytic efficiency of the TiO2/ACF only reduced about 10% after 12 cyclic degradation runs. By examining morphologies of the TiO2/ACF before and after 12 cyclic runs, the deactivation of the TiO2/ACF was partially attributed to loss of loaded TiO2 and destruction of uniform distribution of TiO2 layer.
