Evaluation of Antioxidant Activities of Methanol Extract of Polygonum chinensis Linn

Polygonum chinensis Linn with anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties was used as a folk medicine in Taiwan. In this work, we examined the antioxidant activities of methanol extract from roots of P. chinensis Linn. The methanol extract was re-dissolved in deionized water and further fractionated by sequential extraction with n-hexane, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate and 1-butanol. The ethyl acetate fraction showed the highest scavenging activities against radicals of DPPH, ABTS and superoxide as well as ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). The efficient concentration of scavenging 50% of DPPH radicals (EC50) for the ethyl acetate fraction was not significantly different from those of BHA and ascorbic acid. In addition, the scavenging effect against superoxide was crude extract and its derived fractions were lower than those of BHA and ascorbic acid. The correlation coefficient from regression analysis indicated a positive relation between total phenolic content and antioxidant activity.
