A TWO-PHASE FLOW MODEL FOR SHEET FLOW

We consider concentrated sediment transport that is driven by strong, fully developed turbulentshear flows over a mobile bed。 The model is based on balance equations for the average mass, momentum,and fluctuation energy for both the fluid and sediment phases。 Closures for the correlations betweenfluctuations in concentration and particle velocities are based on those for collisional grain flow。 An attemptis made to describe the region of enduring contact of high concentration above the stationary bed。 A failurecriterion is introduced to determine the location of the stationary bed。 The proposed model is solvednumerically with a finite difference algorithm in both steady and unsteady conditions。 The predictions ofsediment concentration and velocity are tested against experimental measurements of relatively massiveparticles。 The model is further employed to study the effect of flow acceleration on sediment transport。
