Seventeen genotypes were evaluated in a replicated trial at Research and Development Farm, Vasantdada Sugar Institute, Pune in 2007-2008 to estimate phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation, herttability and genetic advance for twenty different characters in sugarcane (Saccharum qfficinarum L)。 Analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences between genotypes for all the characters studied。 From the above studies it could be concluded that, the three clones viz。, 25-179 (cane yield 142。29 MT/ha; CCS 20。34 MT/ha。), 46-149 (cane yield 150。49 MT/ha; CCS 20。54 MT/ha。) and 65-131 (cane yield 154。19 MT/ha; CCS 23。29 MT/ha。) were given significantly higher cane and sugar yield than the standards CoC 671 (Cane yield 107。37 MT/ha; CCS 16。31 MT/ha), Co 86032 (cane yield 115。94 MT/ha; CCS 16。24 MT/ha。) and Co 94012 (cane yield 107。72 MT/ha: CCS 16。00 MT/ha。)。 Phenotypic variance was higher than genotypic variance in almost all the characters。 Genotypic and phenotypic variance was higher than environmental variance far cane and sugar yield, millable cane number, single cane weight, cane diameter, cane height and quality characters。 Genotypic and phenotypic co-efficient of variance was higher in eight characters viz。, commercial cane yield t/ha。(21。33 & 22。76 %), cane yield t/ha。(17。69 &19。41 %), single cane weight (14。68 & 16。64 %), total height (11。32 &13。34 %), millable height (12。55 & 14。86 %), cane diameter (14。68 & 16。64 %), sucrose % at 10&12 months (11。22 &12。33 %) and commercial cane sugar (12。07 &13。24%)。 High broad sense heritability was recorded for jive characters viz。, commercial cane sugar t/ha。 (88 %), cane yield t/ha。 (83 %), millable cane number (88%), single cane weight (84%) and all the quality characters。 The higher values of genetic advance were observed in single cane weight, total height of cane (cm), millable height of cane (cm), and cane yield per hectare and commercial cane sugar (t/ha。)。
