Terrain scene modeling has become a research hotspot in virtual reality applications。 However, due to the huge amount of 3D spatial data, there are still many problems unresolved such as low scene rendering frame rate, scene image popping。 In this paper, a new simulation roaming optimization algorithm is proposed based on dynamic simplification which is implemented on VRML technology platform。 Firstly, the appropriate terrain nodes are selected from the original DEM data according to the position and orientation of the viewpoint。 Then on the basis of the selected nodes, data interpolation is carried out to form regular grid model data structure。 Thirdly, the grid model data is loaded into elevation grid node of VRML to create terrain surface model。 Finally, visualization rendering technologies such as illumination, texture, material are used to make the scene model realistic。 The results of simulation experiment show that this algorithm improves scene rendering frame rate greatly and eliminates popping effect effectively and has a wide application prospect。
