A Study of Fabricating Copper Foams using Boric Acid as Foaming Agent

Copper metal foam was manufactured by means of powder metallurgy process. The novel materialused in this research as foaming agent on copper was boric acid powder. Cu powders were mixedwith 30-50 wt.% of boric acid and pressed into green cylinders by uniaxial pressing. Heat treatmentwas performed for both foaming and sintering of samples. The microstructure characteristic and quasistaticcompressive behavior of the foams at strain rate of 10~(−3)s~(−1) were investigated. Copper foamswith the porosity in the range of 30–40% and cell size in the range of 80-150 μm have been produced.
