    Transcranial direct current stimulation of bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex eliminates creativity impairment induced by acute stress

    查看更多>>摘要:? 2021 Elsevier B.V.The creativity impairment under acute stress may be closely related to the down-regulation of the prefrontal cortex function caused by stress-related neurotransmitters and hormones. In the current study, we explored whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) eliminated stress-induced creativity impairment and the potential mechanism from the perspective of stress response recovery. Seventy participants were randomly allocated to a group undergoing the activation of right DLPFC and the deactivation of left DLPFC (R+L?; N = 35), and a group of sham stimulation (sham; N = 35). Participants received tDCS after the stress induction, and then completed the Alternative Uses Task (AUT) and the Remote Association Task (RAT) during the stimulation. The stress response was indicated using heart rate, cortisol, and emotion changes. Results showed that R+L? stimulation facilitated the recovery of anxious state compared to sham stimulation. We also found that the decreased value of AUT scores after stress in the R+L? group was significantly lower than that in the sham group. Moreover, further analysis revealed state anxiety mediated the effect of tDCS on the flexibility component of the AUT. We concluded that bilateral tDCS over the DLPFC is efficient in alleviating stress-induced creativity impairment, which may correlate with greater recovery of state anxiety. Our findings provide causal evidence for the neurophysiological mechanisms by which stress affects creativity, as well as clinical suggestions for stress-related psychiatric disorders prevention and intervention.

    Development of children's performance and ERP components in the equiprobable Go/NoGo task

    查看更多>>摘要:? 2021Since the equiprobable Go/NoGo task lacks the dominant Go imperative of the usual Go/NoGo (with more Go than NoGo stimuli), it is generally regarded as involving little inhibition. However, children have relative difficulty with this task, and have a large frontal NoGo N2. We previously found that this ‘child N2’ does play an inhibitory role, with larger frontal N2b associated with fewer commission errors. Here we investigated age-related developmental differences in the N2b and other components in the equiprobable Go/NoGo task. Two groups of eighteen Younger children (aged 8.0 to 10.3 years) and eighteen Older children (aged 10.4 to 12.8 years), matched on sex, were presented with three stimulus blocks each containing 100 Go and 100 NoGo tone stimuli in random order. Four temporal PCAs, each with unrestricted VARIMAX rotation, separately quantified the Go and NoGo ERPs of each group, and similar components were extracted from each set. Most identified components were differentially enhanced to either Go or NoGo, as in adults, supporting a previously-proposed differential sequential processing schema. The Older group had Go component latencies that were systematically reduced by some 7.4% from the Younger group, and they displayed faster RT and fewer omission and commission errors. Between subjects in the Older group, larger frontocentral NoGo N2b was associated with fewer commission errors. Hence the NoGo N2b in this paradigm can be interpreted as an individual marker of inhibition in older, but not young, children.

    Rapid category selectivity for animals versus man-made objects: An N2pc study

Visual search for animals is faster than for man-made objects, even when the images from those categories have comparable gist statistics (i.e., low- or mid-level visual information), which suggests that higher-level, conceptual influences may support this search advantage for animals. However, it remains unclear whether the search advantage can be explained in part by early visual search processes via the N2pc ERP component, which emerges earlier than behavioral responses, across different categorization levels. Participants searched for 1) an exact image (e.g., a specific squirrel image, Exemplar-level Search), 2) any images of an item (e.g., any squirrels, Basic-level Search), or 3) any items in a category (e.g., any animals, Superordinate-level Search). In addition to Target Present trials, Foil trials measured involuntary attentional selection of task-irrelevant images related to the targets (e.g., other squirrel images when searching for a specific squirrel image, or other animals when searching for squirrels). ERP results revealed 1) a larger N2pc amplitude during Foil trials in Exemplar-level Search for animals than man-made objects, and 2) faster onset latencies for animal search than man-made object search across all categorization levels. These results suggest that the search advantage for animals over man-made objects emerges early, and that attentional selection is more biased toward the basic-level (e.g., squirrel) for animals than for man-made objects during visual search.

    Integrating dynamic and developmental time scales: Emotion-specific autonomic coordination predicts baseline functioning over time

    查看更多>>摘要:? 2021 Elsevier B.V.Autonomic nervous system activity flexibly shifts and modulates behavior at multiple time scales, with some work suggesting that patterns of short-term reactivity contribute to long-term developmental change. However, previous work has largely considered sympathetic and parasympathetic systems independently, even though both systems contribute dynamically to the regulation of physiological arousal. Using physiological data obtained from 313 children in kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade we examined whether within-person autonomic coordination during an emotion-inducing film task in kindergarten was associated with developmental change in resting autonomic activity. On average, these kindergarteners exhibited reciprocal coordination during the approach-oriented emotion (angry, happy) condition and a lack of coordination during the avoidance-oriented emotion (fear, sad) condition. Alignment with these patterns was associated with more typical autonomic development, specifically an increase in resting respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) and a decrease in resting skin conductance (SCR) from kindergarten to 2nd grade; while lack of coordination during the approach condition was associated with a relatively delayed increase in resting RSA and a steeper decline in SCR, and reciprocal coordination during the avoidance condition was associated with a lack of RSA increase. Findings highlight the need for additional consideration of how moment-to-moment dynamics of autonomic coordination influence longer-term development, and suggest that early patterns of atypical arousal may portend dysregulation of developing physiological systems.

    Adult attachment style moderates the effect of oxytocin on neural responses to infant emotional faces

    查看更多>>摘要:? 2021 Elsevier B.V.Oxytocin (OT) is known for its positive influence on maternal motivation and behavior, however, the effects of intranasal oxytocin (IN-OT) on neural activity during the perception of infant stimuli are often inconsistent. These discrepancies further reveal the need to take into account individual differences in IN-OT research. The present study aims to examine whether the effects of IN-OT on maternal-related neural responses to infant faces were moderated by participants' attachment style. Using a between-groups, double-blind, placebo-controlled design, 65 nulliparous females were randomly assigned to groups receiving a single dose of 24 IU oxytocin or a placebo via intranasal administration. The neural responses of participants were assessed during a facial recognition task with joy, neutral, and crying infant faces. The results indicated that females with high levels of attachment anxiety exhibited decreased right amygdala activity in response to infant joy faces and decreased bilateral insula activity in response to infant crying faces following IN-OT. Meanwhile, IN-OT enhanced bilateral amygdala and left inferior orbital frontal cortex (OFC) activity in response to infant crying faces in females with high levels of attachment avoidance. In addition, some beneficial effects of IN-OT were also observed in females with low levels of attachment avoidance or anxiety. Our findings demonstrated that the beneficial effects of IN-OT on neural responses to infant faces may depend on individual differences in adult attachment style, thereby contributing to our understanding of the role of OT in maternal caregiving.

    Hormonal contraceptive use moderates the association between worry and error-related brain activity

    查看更多>>摘要:? 2021 Elsevier B.V.Uncovering mechanisms that can help explain the experience and impact of anxiety in women is important for improving etiological models and treatments to meet the needs of unique individuals. An enlarged error-related negativity (ERN) – an electrophysiological marker of cognitive control-related error monitoring– represents one indicator of neural processes more strongly related to anxiety in women than men. In this study, we further examined this association in women by testing the moderating effect of hormonal contraceptive (HC) use on the relationship between worry – i.e., a transdiagnostic cognitive dimension of anxiety – and the ERN. Results revealed that HCs moderated the worry-ERN association. Specifically, we found a significant and large relationship between worry and enlarged ERN in women using HCs, which was smaller and nonsignificant in naturally cycling women (i.e., those not using HCs). These findings suggest that the interplay among HC use, error-related cognitive control, and worry represents a novel mechanism for better characterizing the expression and impact of worry in women.
