    Temporal dynamics of explicit and implicit moral evaluations

    查看更多>>摘要:Explicit moral evaluation is often accompanied with active attention and explicit responses to moral information, while implicit moral evaluation happens in passive attention and implicit response to moral information. Previous studies have pointed out the differences in the neural mechanisms underlying explicit and implicit moral processing on the spatial dimension, however, the temporal differences between these two processes have not been clear. This study aimed at comparing the temporal dynamics between explicit and implicit moral evaluation of harm/care-related moral scenarios with high/low emotional arousal by using event-related potentials (ERP) technique. The behavioral results showed that the accuracy of the explicit task is higher than that of the implicit task, especially for high-arousal moral actions. The ERP results mainly revealed that regardless of the task type, the brain responses to moral evaluations can be divided into early emotional arousal processing indexed by the frontal N1, moral intuition indexed by the frontal N2, and middle/late stages of processing integration of emotional arousal and moral cognition which involve elaborative processing and cognitive control, reflected by the frontal P2, parietal P3, parietal LPP, and FSW. Moreover, explicit and implicit moral evaluations mainly differed in the late stage of moral processing indexed by the P3, LPP and FSW. Our findings provide robust evidence for the "hybrid" model supposed by Huebner, which suggested that both explicit and implicit moral evaluations involved a complex interaction between emotional processes and moral cognition, and the later ERP results strongly supported that explicit and implicit moral evaluations represented two relatively independent processes, fitting the multinomial model supposed by Cameron.

    Effect of childhood maltreatment on cardiovascular response habitation to repeated psychosocial stress*

    查看更多>>摘要:Childhood maltreatment as an early-life stress leads to cardiovascular stress response dysregulation manifested by either exaggerated or blunted stress responses. However, little is known how childhood maltreatment affects cardiovascular response habituation to recurrent stress, which implicated in the long-term health effects of chronic stress. The scale of Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) was administered to 192 healthy undergraduates who underwent continuous cardiovascular monitoring [heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), cardiac output (CO) and total peripheral resistance (TPR)] while facing two consecutive psychosocial stress exposures (public speaking tasks). Results showed that childhood maltreatment was negatively associated with HR and CO reactivity to the first stress exposure and HR reactivity to the second stress exposure. Even after controlling for depression symptoms, both high and low childhood maltreatment groups (upper and lower 27% of total CTQ scores) exhibited HR and CO response habituation to repeated stress exposures, but high childhood maltreatment group showed blunted HR and CO reactivity to the first stress exposure compared with low childhood maltreatment group. These findings suggest that the observed cardiovascular response habituation to repeated stress following initial blunted (i.e., inadequate) reactivity among individuals with high childhood maltreated experiences might be maladaptive, which would lead to cardiovascular disease risk.

    Early detection and treatment of attention deficits in preterm and at term infants with risk factors for brain damage

    查看更多>>摘要:Cognitive deficits in infants born preterm and infants at term with risk factors for brain damage are a common outcome. Attention deficits in preterm infants are related to the development of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and therefore, there is a need for earlier evaluations and treatment procedures that are implemented before the presence of signs of ADHD.Methods: We studied preterm (74%) and term infants with the Infant Scale of Selective Attention (ISSA, Escala de Evaluaci acute accent on de la Atenci acute accent on Selectiva (EEAS), in Spanish). This scale evaluates both visual-and auditory-orienting attention. Two groups participated, one with attention deficits (n = 26) and another with regular performance (n = 36). An early attention-stimulation program (EASP) was implemented in the infant group with attention deficits from three to eight months of age. All infants underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and visual and auditory evoked responses were assessed.Results: All infants had prenatal and perinatal risk factors for brain damage and abnormal MRI findings, and the majority had abnormalities compatible with white matter injury. However, there were four infants with porencephalic cysts; 3 of them were in the treated group. At the beginning of the treatment, ISSA values showed differences between groups. These differences persisted for five months in the visual test and up to the sixth month in the auditory evaluation. Afterward, there were no significant differences, indicating that infants with attention deficits had satisfactorily responded to the treatment.Conclusions: The ISSA is helpful for the early evaluation of visual and auditory attention. Infants with attention deficits react well enough after six months of EASP.

    Dementia ConnEEGtome: Towards multicentric harmonization of EEG connectivity in neurodegeneration

    查看更多>>摘要:The proposal to use brain connectivity as a biomarker for dementia phenotyping can be potentiated by conducting large-scale multicentric studies using high-density electroencephalography (hd-EEG). Nevertheless, several barriers preclude the development of a systematic "ConnEEGtome" in dementia research. Here we review critical sources of variability in EEG connectivity studies, and provide general guidelines for multicentric protocol harmonization. We describe how results can be impacted by the choice for data acquisition, and signal processing workflows. The implementation of a particular processing pipeline is conditional upon assumptions made by researchers about the nature of EEG. Due to these assumptions, EEG connectivity metrics are typically applicable to restricted scenarios, e.g., to a particular neurocognitive disorder. "Ground truths" for the choice of processing workflow and connectivity analysis are impractical. Consequently, efforts should be directed to harmonizing experimental procedures, data acquisition, and the first steps of the preprocessing pipeline. Conducting multiple analyses of the same data and a proper integration of the results need to be considered in additional processing steps. Furthermore, instead of using a single connectivity measure, using a composite metric combining different connectivity measures brings a powerful strategy to scale up the replicability of multicentric EEG connectivity studies. These composite metrics can boost the predictive strength of diagnostic tools for dementia. Moreover, the implementation of multi-feature machine learning classification systems that include EEG-based connectivity analyses may help to exploit the potential of multicentric studies combining clinical-cognitive, molecular, genetics, and neuroimaging data towards a multi-dimensional characterization of the dementia.

    Age-related changes in the EEG in an eyes-open condition: I. Normal development

    查看更多>>摘要:This study investigated age related changes in the EEG of normal children in an eyes-open condition, in order to provide developmental norms for the study of children and adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) - see our companion paper (Mason et al., submitted). EEG was recorded at 17 sites from 75 children (63 boys and 12 girls, in the approximately 5:1 ratio common in AD/HD) between the ages of 5 and 16 years. They comprised three groups, each of 25 children (21 boys and 4 girls), divided into Young (5-8 years), Middle (9-12 years), and Old (13-16 years). The EEG was recorded during an eyes-open resting condition and Fourier transformed to provide estimates for total power, and absolute and relative power in the delta, theta, alpha and beta bands. Total power and absolute delta, theta, alpha, and beta decreased with increasing age, as did relative delta, while relative alpha increased with increasing age. Changes occurred faster in the posterior regions for total power, absolute theta and alpha, relative theta, and in frontal regions for absolute and relative beta. Some lateral developmental effects differed with band. These results indicate that maturation effects observed in the eyes-open EEG show some similarities to those reported in eyes-closed conditions, although substantial differences are apparent in the maturation of fast wave activity, particularly alpha. The data provide simple age-norms for eyes-open investigations of EEG differences in young clinical groups, particularly AD/HD. They encourage further investigations of the activational effects of this simple eyes-closed/eyes-open manipulation, which may aid understanding of the energetics of behaviour.

    Neural correlates of compassion - An integrative systematic review

    查看更多>>摘要:Compassion is a psychological construct that has received increasing attention in recent years. Even though a lot of work has been done to identify neural correlates of empathy across studies, such work has not been properly done on neural correlates of compassion. Therefore, the aim was to systematically review the literature on neural correlates of compassion.We have searched through PsycINFO, PubMed and Web of Science for relevant articles published between 1985 and 2020. We included the studies (n = 35) examining the relationship between brain structure or function and compassion. Screening was performed by two authors, between whom a level of agreement was calculated. The quality of the studies was assessed by measures used in other studies as well by measures specific for our study aims. This study was conducted under PRISMA guidelines.Our analysis revealed that the most frequent neural associations with compassion across all analysed studies can be found in the orbital part of the left inferior frontal gyrus, in the right cerebellum, the bilateral middle temporal gyrus, in the bilateral insula and the right caudate nucleus.Our findings suggest that people displaying a lower compassion tend to have either lower neural activity or a grey matter volume in neural areas associated with reward.
