查看更多>>摘要:Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) elicited by auditory stimuli unrelated to a current visual-cognitive task (i.e., task-irrelevant auditory probes) can be used to evaluate the level of mental workload. Towards the evaluation of workload in the shortest possible time, the present study with a multiple-stimulus paradigm (Takeda and Kimura, 2014, Int. J. Psychophysiol.) examined whether manipulating time intervals between probes could improve the temporal resolution in evaluating workload. Probes were presented in four interval conditions as a combination of two mean interval lengths [long (600 ms) vs. short (300 ms)] and two interval variabilities [variable (five levels) vs. fixed], while participants were performing a driving game at slow and fast speeds (i.e., imposing low and high workload, respectively). For each interval condition, the minimum data length required to obtain a significant difference in the amplitude of ERPs (i.e., auditory N1 and P2) between the slow and fast driving tasks was estimated. The N1 difference was significant in all four interval conditions but the required minimum data lengths to observe this difference did not greatly differ across the interval conditions (about 60-90 s). The P2 difference was significant only in the long-variable condition and the required minimum data length was about 120 s. These results suggest that, at least with a multiple-stimulus paradigm, manipulations of time intervals between probes did not greatly improve the temporal resolution in evaluating mental workload; at present, longvariable intervals would be optimal for evaluating mental workload in detail.
查看更多>>摘要:Emotion regulation (ER), a key predictor of positive adjustment throughout the lifespan, is forged in development with profound contributions from parents. In particular, parent scaffolding of child cognition and emotion serves to bolster child regulatory abilities beyond what they could achieve alone. Through habitual parent-child interactions, scaffolded ER likely becomes internalized and drives foundations of neurocognitive regulatory circuitry. Yet, biobehavioral research is needed to establish predictive links between parent scaffolding behaviors and neurocognitive signatures of adaptive child ER. The present study examined observed parental spontaneous scaffolding of child performance during emotionally and cognitively challenging behavioral tasks to predict a neurocognitive signature of adaptive ER: the late positive potential (LPP). The LPP is an event-related potential (ERP) that is modulated by reappraisal, a widely-studied ER strategy defined as interpreting a stimulus in a more positive light. Reduced magnitude of the LPP via reappraisal is a signature of adaptive ER because it predicts both reduced emotional arousal and increased use of adaptive ER strategies. Ninety-seven (49 females; Mage = 6.96, SD = 1.15) 5 to 9 year olds were recruited along with one parent each. Parents and children then completed a cognitively challenging blocks task and a frustrating waiting task, which were subsequently coded to quantify scaffolding quality. Participants completed a Directed Reappraisal Task (DRT) in which unpleasant pictures were paired with either reappraisal or negative interpretations while EEG was recorded. Results showed that greater parental use of high-quality scaffolding predicted greater reduction of the LPP via reappraisal. These findings suggest that habitual parent scaffolding supports adaptive ER measured at the neurocognitive level in childhood. Further, results highlight the importance of examining parent-child interactions when evaluating biological processes underlying ER in childhood.

查看更多>>摘要:Emotion regulation is critical for managing stress, but many regulatory strategies consume high levels of cognitive resources to implement, which are depleted under stress. This raises a conundrum: the tools we have to feel better may be ineffective when they are most needed. Recent event-related potential (ERP) research indicates that distanced self-talk (i.e., reflecting on one's experiences using non-first-person singular pronouns and one's name) reduces negative emotional reactivity without overtaxing cognitive resources. Here, we report the first direct replication of this work and extend it by examining how distanced self-talk compares to detached reappraisal, one of the most frequently studied regulatory techniques. Sixty-seven participants were randomly assigned to an emotion regulation picture task and instructed to reflect on the feelings they experienced in response to viewing negative emotional images using distanced self-talk or detached reappraisal while ERPs were measured. Directly replicating past findings, distanced self-talk led to a reduction in an affective arousal ERP, the late positive potential (LPP), without increasing stimulus preceding negativity (SPN), an ERP that reflects anticipatory and preparatory processing. These results further bolster support for distanced self-talk as a relatively effortless emotion regulation strategy. On the other hand, detached reappraisal was neither associated with the modulation of the LPP nor the SPN. Due to the failed replication of the reappraisal effect, a direct comparison between emotion regulation strategies was not conducted. Methodological limitations that may have contributed to the reappraisal failure and future directions for comparisons between emotion regulation strategies are discussed.

查看更多>>摘要:Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic condition of widespread pain accompanied by symptoms like depression, fatigue and cognitive impairments. In addition to central nervous pain sensitization, emotional dysregulation may be involved in FMS pathogenesis. This study investigated emotional influences on cognitive processing in FMS. Event-related potentials and theta oscillations were recorded during an emotional Stroop task including positive, negative, and neutral adjectives in 36 FMS patients and 35 controls. Patients had larger P3 amplitudes and greater theta power than controls, independent of the emotional word content. In patients, but not controls, negative words were associated with a larger late positive component (LPC) amplitude than positive words. No group difference was seen for P1, early posterior negativity or N4. Reaction times (RTs) were longer in patients than controls, independent of emotional word content. The P3 and theta oscillation findings suggest greater cognitive effort and attentional mobilization in FMS, which is needed to overcome the reduction of attentional resources resulting from central nervous pain sensitization. Although RTs do not support attentional bias in FMS, emotional modulation of the LPC amplitude may reflect preferential central nervous processing of negative information, which could contribute to pain and affective symptoms characterizing FMS. 查看更多>>摘要:Our previous studies of the equiprobable auditory Go/NoGo task have been used to substantiate a perceptual/ cognitive Processing Schema in young and older adults, and in children. The processes in the Schema are linked to PCA components derived separately from Go and NoGo ERPs. Here we investigated sex differences in the child Schema. Two groups of fourteen children (aged 8 to 13 years) were individually matched on age and presented with four stimulus blocks of the equiprobable Go/NoGo task, each containing 75 NoGo and 75 Go tones in random order. Separate NoGo and Go ERPs were obtained from each child and submitted to temporal Principal Components Analyses (PCAs). Each ERP was analysed in two epochs (- 100-400 ms and 300-800 ms) to improve the cases:variables ratio. Four pairs of temporal PCAs, each with unrestricted VARIMAX rotation, separately quantified the NoGo and Go ERPs of each epoch in each group. After these pairs were combined in temporal order, four sets of similar components were extracted. Many identified components were differentially enhanced to either NoGo or Go, as in previous work with children. The Female group had NoGo component latencies that were systematically some 3.5% greater than in Males, but there were no sex differences in Go latencies. Females also displayed fewer NoGo commission and Go omission errors, and faster Go RT than Males. Females had larger NoGo N2b, and larger Go components from N2b through to the late positivity. These results, including their ERP component/behaviour correlations, can be integrated as a task-specific behavioural and ERP processing enhancement in girls that suggests their developmental advantage over boys in this age range.

查看更多>>摘要:Ineffective stress-coping in Africans is associated with cardiac ischemia during acute mental stress. Ischemic conditions may be worsened by stress-induced release of glial-derived S100-calcium-binding-protein beta (S100B), which is pro-apoptotic for cardiomyocytes. Whether estradiol as coping regulator and cardio-protective factor will protect against pro-apoptotic effects, remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to investigate stress-induced associations between cardiac troponin T/cTnT (cardiac ischemic marker), S100B and estradiol in a bi-ethnic cohort of defensive copers of both sexes. The target population study included African and Caucasian teachers of both sexes (n = 344; aged 20-65 years). The Stroop-color-word-conflict-test was administrated for 1 min to induce acute mental stress in the participants. A chronic stress risk phenotype score was obtained. The Coping Strategy Indicator determined habitual defensive/avoidance/seeking social support coping scores. Fasting blood samples were obtained prior to and 10 min post-Stroop-stress to assess cTnT, S100B and estradiol levels. An interaction between ethnicity, sex and defensive coping (p < 0.05) was found for acute stress-induced percentage changes in estradiol. In defensive coping African men, the Stroop-color-word-conflict-test elicited decreases in S100B and increases in estradiol. Again, in this group, S100B decreases were related to unchanged cTnT, a chronic stress risk phenotype and acute estradiol increases (p < 0.05). No associations among main markers were apparent in the African women or the Caucasian defensive copers of both sexes. In the defensive coping African men, the markers studied may play a relevant role in the brain-cardiovascular system interaction during stress exposure. Further research is needed to elaborate on potential mechanisms and to establish clinical relevance.
查看更多>>摘要:Individuals who score high in self-reported Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU) tend to find uncertainty aversive. Prior research has demonstrated that under uncertainty individuals with high IU display difficulties in updating learned threat associations to safety associations. Importantly, recent research has shown that providing contingency instructions about threat and safety contingencies (i.e. reducing uncertainty) to individuals with high IU promotes the updating of learned threat associations to safety associations. Here we aimed to conceptually replicate IU and contingency instruction-based effects by conducting a secondary analysis of self-reported IU, ratings, skin conductance, and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data recorded during uninstructed/instructed blocks of threat acquisition and threat extinction training (n = 48). Generally, no significant associations were observed between self-reported IU and differential responding to learned threat and safety cues for any measure during uninstructed/instructed blocks of threat acquisition and threat extinction training. There was some tentative evidence that higher IU was associated with greater ratings of unpleasantness and arousal to the safety cue after the experiment and greater skin conductance response to the safety cue during extinction generally. Potential explanations for these null effects and directions for future research are discussed.
查看更多>>摘要:Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD) is the most diffuse neurodegenerative disorder belonging to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia in old persons. This disease is provoked by an abnormal accumulation of amyloid-beta and tauopathy proteins in the brain. Very recently, the first disease-modifying drug has been licensed with reserve (i.e., Aducanumab). Therefore, there is a need to identify and use biomarkers probing the neurophysiological underpinnings of human cognitive functions to test the clinical efficacy of that drug. In this regard, event-related electroencephalographic potentials (ERPs) and oscillations (EROs) are promising candidates. Here, an Expert Panel from the Electrophysiology Professional Interest Area of the Alzheimer's Association and Global Brain Consortium reviewed the field literature on the effects of the most used symptomatic drug against ADD (i.e., Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors) on ERPs and EROs in ADD patients with MCI and dementia at the group level. The most convincing results were found in ADD patients. In those patients, Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors partially normalized ERP P300 peak latency and amplitude in oddball paradigms using visual stimuli. In these same paradigms, those drugs partially normalize ERO phase-locking at the theta band (4-7 Hz) and spectral coherence between electrode pairs at the gamma (around 40 Hz) band. These results are of great interest and may motivate multicentric, double-blind, randomized, and placebo-controlled clinical trials in MCI and ADD patients for final cross-validation.

查看更多>>摘要:Emotion regulation (ER) processes in older adults may be important for successful aging. Neural correlates of ER processes have been examined using event-related brain potentials (ERPs), such as the late-positive potential (LPP) during cognitive reappraisal paradigms. The current study sought to extend this research by examining the LPP from an ER task in a sample of 47 community-dwelling older adults between the ages of 60 and 84 years, scoring either high on emotional well-being (as measured by habitual ER use and resiliency; high WB group, n = 20) or low on emotional well-being (as measured by habitual ER use, resiliency, and depression; low WB group, n = 27). Participants viewed unpleasant and neutral images and were instructed to simply react to the images or reappraise their emotional response. Both pre-and post-instruction LPP amplitudes were scored, in addition to self-reported ratings of negative emotion collected during the task. We found greater LPP amplitude to emotionally salient compared to neutral stimuli, reduced LPP amplitude following instructions to reappraise emotional response to stimuli across groups, and a blunted LPP overall for individuals with higher depressive symptoms. Additionally, we demonstrated that older adults with low emotional well-being were less successful at reappraisal according to self-reported ratings of negative emotion, although this was not reflected in the LPP. Collectively, these data suggest that laboratory-based ER tasks might be used to understand abnormal ER use-though the LPP may be more sensitive to depression than individual differences in ER ability.
