    Faces are not always special for attention: Effects of response-relevance and identity

    查看更多>>摘要:Research over the past 25 years indicates that stimulus processing is diminished when attention is engaged in a perceptually demanding task of high 'perceptual load'. These results have generalized across a variety of stimulus categories, but a controversy evolved over the question of whether perception of distractor faces (or other categories of perceptual expertise) can proceed irrespective of the level of perceptual load in the attended task. Here we identify task-relevance, and in particular identity-relevance, as a potentially important factor in explaining prior inconsistencies. In four experiments, we tested whether perceptual load in an attended letter or word task modulates the processing of famous face distractors, while varying their task-relevance. Distractor interference effects on task RTs was reduced by perceptual load not only when the faces were entirely taskirrelevant, but also when the face gender was task relevant, within a name gender classification responsecompetition task, using famous female or male distractor faces. However, when the identity associated with the famous faces was primed by the task using their names, as in prior demonstrations that face distractors are immune to the effects of perceptual load, we were able to replicate these prior findings. Our findings demonstrate a role for identity-priming by the relevant task in determining attentional capture by faces under high perceptual load. Our results also highlight the importance of considering even relatively subtle forms of task-relevance in selective attention research.

    查看更多>>摘要:Predictive deceleration of eye motion during smooth pursuit is induced by explicit cues indicating the timing of the visual target offset. The first aim of this study (experiment 1) was to determine whether the timing of the onset of cue-based predictive pursuit termination depends on spatial or temporal information using three target velocities. The second aim (experiment 2) was to examine whether an unexpected offset of the target affects the pursuit termination. We conducted a pursuit termination task where participants tracked a moving target and then stopped tracking after the target disappeared. The results of experiment 1 showed that the onset times of predictive eye deceleration were consistent regardless of target velocity, indicating that its timing is controlled by the temporal estimation, rather than the spatial distance between the target and cue positions. In experiment 2, we compared pursuit termination between the following two conditions. One condition did not present any cues (unknown condition), whereas a second condition included a same cue as experiment 1 but the target disappeared 500 ms before the timing indicated by the cue unpredictably (unexpected condition). As a result, the unexpected condition showed significant delays in the onset of eye deceleration, but no difference in the total time for completion of pursuit termination. Therefore, our findings suggest that the cue-based pursuit termination is controlled by the predictive pursuit system, and an unexpected offset of the target yields delays in the onset of eye deceleration, while does not affect the duration of pursuit termination.

    Predicting blur visual discomfort for natural scenes by the loss of positional information

    查看更多>>摘要:The perception of blur due to accommodation failures, insufficient optical correction or imperfect image reproduction is a common source of visual discomfort, usually attributed to an anomalous and annoying distribution of the image spectrum in the spatial frequency domain. In the present paper, this discomfort is related to a loss of the localization accuracy of the observed patterns. It is assumed, as a starting perceptual principle, that the visual system is optimally adapted to pattern localization in a natural environment. Thus, since the best possible accuracy of the image patterns localization is indicated by the positional Fisher Information, it is argued that blur discomfort is strictly related to a loss of this information. Following this concept, a receptive field functional model is adopted to predict the visual discomfort. It is a complex-valued operator, orientationselective both in the space domain and in the spatial frequency domain. Starting from the case of Gaussian blur, the analysis is extended to a generic type of blur by applying a positional Fisher Information equivalence criterion. Out-of-focus blur and astigmatic blur are presented as significant examples. The validity of the proposed model is verified by comparing its predictions with subjective ratings. The model fits linearly with the experiments reported in independent databases, based on different protocols and settings.

    Geometrical scaling of the developing eye and photoreceptors and a possible relation to emmetropization and myopia

The underlying hypothesis is that the size and packing of outer segments is matched to the pupil size outdoors in photopic conditions. Vergence is analysed in relation to the angular spectrum of waves being incident using age-dependent data from the literature for the actual geometry and density of photoreceptor cones and rods. This approach is used to derive simple relations for the angular confinement of light along outer segments. Only with a small photopic pupil can leakage and crosstalk for both central and peripheral photoreceptors be entirely ruled out due to the finite length of the outer segments. A limiting 3 mm pupil size is found for children in the school age. Larger pupils will increase the likelihood of leakage and crosstalk that may therefore impact on emmetropization. This study has introduced a new paradigm in myopia research by considering vergence across the 3-D retina as being matched to the angular spectrum of waves being incident from the eye pupil. Emmetropization suggests a delicate balance between photoreceptor outer segment length and density in relation to pupil size. Only when balanced will leakage and crosstalk between adjacent outer segments be effectively suppressed thereby ensuring the highest possible light capture efficiency by visual pigments in the outer segments whether an image is formed on the retina or not.
