    Adaptive target enhancement determines levels of guidability in Multiple Object Tracking

    查看更多>>摘要:Flexible resource models suggest that attentional deployment in Multiple Object Tracking either shows in target enhancement or distractor inhibition or both. In order to gauge the influence of these processes we manipulated distinctiveness of targets and distractors along a single dimension by finely grading gray values of objects. We established that a quantitative increase in distinctiveness results in a quantitative increase in tracking performance thus demonstrating a new finding. Further increases of distinctiveness beyond a certain degree produced no further improvements in tracking. This effect, however, was moderated by levels of task difficulty thus providing evidence for the relativity of this effect. With higher task difficulty higher degrees of distinctiveness still resulted in a significant performance gain (Experiment 1). A follow up experiment generalized this finding. By manipulating speed of objects, a situation with a yet higher task difficulty could be established showing that an increase of an already striking distinctiveness can produce an even further performance gain - provided higher task difficulty (Experiment 2). Finally we tested the hypothesis that target enhancement and distractor inhibition are influenced by feature distinctiveness. Although we found possible indications for distractor inhibition, we could not demonstrate an effect of feature distinctiveness on distractor inhibition. Target enhancement, however, was substantially influenced by variation of feature distinctiveness (Experiment 3).

    Frequency of oculomotor disorders in adolescents 11 to 17 years of age with concussion, 4 to 12 weeks post injury

    查看更多>>摘要:The purpose of the study was to determine the frequency of vision diagnoses after concussion in adolescents and evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of physician-administered screening for detecting convergence and accommodative disorders post-concussion. We enrolled participants 11 to 17 years old, assessed 4 to 12 weeks following a diagnosed concussion. During the initial concussion examination, a sports medicine physician measured the near point of convergence (NPC), monocular accommodative amplitude (AA), and symptoms using the Convergence Insufficiency Symptom Survey (CISS). A comprehensive oculomotor evaluation was performed by an optometrist. One hundred and thirteen adolescents were enrolled, with a mean age of 15.2 years. Seventy-nine of the 113 (70%) participants had at least one oculomotor diagnosis after concussion, with the most common problems being vergence disorders (60%) and accommodative disorders (57%). The most common vergence disorder was convergence insufficiency (35%). Among accommodative disorders, the most common problem was accommodative insufficiency (35%). In all, 47% of the participants had more than one oculomotor diagnosis following concussion. The sensitivity of physician screening using measures of NPC, AA, and CISS for detecting convergence and accommodative insufficiency was 63%, 43%, 48%, respectively. The results of this study provide additional evidence that vision problems are common in adolescents with persistent concussion symptoms in the sub-acute phase 4 to 12 weeks post-concussion, and current physician screening methods using the NPC, AA, or the CISS underperform. Thus, it is prudent that adolescents with post-concussion symptoms lasting more than 4 weeks post injury receive a comprehensive oculomotor examination.

However, how the visual system computes variability is still unclear. To investigate this, we implemented situations whereby estimates of variability based on several possible variability measures (e.g., range, standard deviation, and weighted standard deviation) could be differentiated, and then examined which best accounted for human variability perception. In three psychophysical experiments, participants watched two arrays of items with various orientations and judged which had more variable orientations. Results showed that perceived variability was most consistent with the weighted standard deviation based on the reliability of individual items. Specifically, participants gave less consideration to deviant orientations that were likely to be outliers, and greater consideration to salient orientations that were likely to be encoded precisely. This reliability-based weighted standard deviation suggests an efficient and flexible way of representing visual variability.

    The development of and recovery from form-deprivation myopia in infant rhesus monkeys reared under reduced ambient lighting

    查看更多>>摘要:Although reduced ambient lighting ("dim" light) can cause myopia in emmetmpizing chicks, it does not necessarily lead to myopic changes in emmetropizing rhesus monkeys. Because myopia is rarely spontaneous, a question remained whether dim light would hasten the progression of visually induced myopia. To determine the effects of dim light on the development of and recovery from form-deprivation myopia (FDM), seven 3-week-old infant rhesus monkeys were reared under dim light (mean +/- SD = 55 +/- 9 lx) with monocular diffuser spectacles until similar to 154 days of age, then maintained in dim light with unrestricted vision until similar to 337 days of age to allow for recovery. Refractive errors, corneal powers, ocular axial dimensions and sub-foveal chomidal thicknesses were measured longitudinally and compared to those obtained from form-deprived monkeys reared under typical laboratory lighting (504 +/- 168 lx). Five of the seven subjects developed FDMs that were similar to those observed among their normal-light-reared counterparts. The average degree of form-deprivation-induced myopic anisometropia did not differ significantly between dim-light subjects (-3.88 +/- 3.26D) and normal-light subjects (-4.45 +/- 3.75D). However, three of the five dim-light subjects that developed obvious FDM failed to exhibit any signs of recovery and the two monkeys that were isometropic at the end of the treatment period manifest abnormal refractive errors during the recovery period. All refractive changes were associated with alterations in vitreous chamber elongation rates. It appears that dim light is not a strong myopiagenic stimulus by itself, but it can impair the optical regulation of refractive development in primates.
