Nursing students were uniquely impacted through the loss of clinical practicum experiences. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore relationships between student perceptions of life-stress and depressive symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic in nursing students compared to students in other academic disciplines. A secondary purpose of this study was to understand nursing student perceptions of how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted their educational experience. Methods: School-related life stress and depression measures were studied in a cross-section of 2326 undergraduate students using an anonymous online survey. Follow-up qualitative data were collected (N = 12) to further explore relationships between school-related life stress and depression in nursing students. Results: Nursing students had higher levels of student-life stress but fewer depressive symptoms than students in any other academic major. Students related that social support and belongingness were critical to their academic perseverance. Conclusions: Differences between nursing and non-nursing students are likely due to a multifactorial combination of social support, resilience, and posttraumatic growth.

Manuscript submissions also lack deadlines, which creates additional challenges. Writing accountability groups (WAGs) are associated with increased faculty writing productivity. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of WAGs, including the process, participants, writing productivity outcomes, benefits, challenges, and unintended consequences. To maintain our writing progress during the COVID-19 pandemic, we moved our WAG sessions to a virtual platform. Our WAG protocol (both face-to-face and virtual) is shared to help other faculty members or doctoral students implement writing accountability groups. We also advocate for hybrid WAG sessions to promote attendance. In addition to facilitation of scholarly writing and improved writing habits, our WAG created opportunities for scholarly communication and networking with colleagues.

查看更多>>摘要:? 2021 Elsevier Inc.Background: Domestic ESL students in the university setting are usually not required to provide proof of English language proficiency. Language barriers may not be identified upon admission, which could put the ESL student at a disadvantage. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate associations between ESL students' English language proficiency admission criteria and academic performance in a nursing program when compared to native English-speaking students. Method: This study utilized a cross-sectional design with a convenience sample of nursing students in an undergraduate nursing program. A survey was administered to identify ESL students and English language proficiency admission criteria including time in an English-speaking environment and attendance at an English-speaking educational institution. Bivariate data analysis identified associations between the ESL students' admission criteria and academic variables when compared to native English-speaking students. Findings: The majority of ESL students were domestic ESL students. A relationship was identified showing domestic ESL students meeting the criteria for second language acquisition underperformed on several academic variables when compared to native English-speaking students. Conclusion: The study results identified a need to determine the English language proficiency of underperforming domestic ESL students who may benefit from resources to assist in communication in nursing practice.

While educators are aware that drinking negatively impacts learning, it is imperative that nursing educators understand why this behavior exists and recognize strategies and opportunities to mitigate drinking for students in the nursing major. Purpose: The purposes of this study were to understand the prevalence of and reasons for alcohol use and binge drinking in undergraduate baccalaureate nursing students in the United States and identify ways faculty may promote a healthy learning environment to decrease the incidence of alcohol use and binge drinking. Method: This descriptive study used a web-based survey methodology. The survey contained a demographic questionnaire, alcohol use survey, and open-ended questions to address reasons for drinking and stressors. The survey was randomly distributed to baccalaureate nursing programs throughout the United States. Results: The final sample included 937 participants. Nursing students abuse alcohol for a variety of reasons including lack of understanding of binge drinking, peer pressure, dealing with mental health issues, and as a way to cope with multifaceted life stressors. Slightly over half (51%) of these participants reported drinking behavior that would be considered hazardous and 3% were in the alcohol dependent category on the alcohol use survey. Conclusion: These findings are consistent with social concerns about alcohol use. Nursing students yearned for help and support from faculty regarding how to handle stress and desired faculty to be role models. Faculty who form collaborative partnerships with students, foster healthy coping strategies which may promote academic success and more importantly favorable outcomes as future practicing nurses.
