While existing research has mainly focused on business-to-consumer (B2C) platforms, relatively little research has been conducted on business-to-business (B2B) platforms. To address this research gap, this study employs a case study approach to collect and examine three out-bound open innovation (OI) application cases in the context of B2B platforms, namely, TSMC, IBM and CNT Tech. The case analysis results show that the coverage of B2B markets can be expanded and diversified by OI. To improve the quality of platform offerings (not only platform services but also complementary innovations), the case firms implemented OI applications comprising two phases that manage knowledge outflows (with boundary resources) and inflows (with input/output controls) across their organisational boundaries. Knowledge sharing provided B2B platform owners new market creation opportunities, combined complementors, and pivoted some of the platform owners' core technologies, consequently diversifying the platforms' applications and making platform ecosystem more dynamic and vibrant.

We build on the idea of Porter's (1980) generic strategies to develop the constructs of strategic focus and strategic blur. Strategic focus is conceptualised as an emphasis on a single strategic performance dimension. In contrast, strategic blur, a construct originated in this study, is the opposite of strategic focus. We define strategic blur as the simultaneous emphasis on all strategic dimensions. In addition, we consider how environmental turbulence moderates the effects of focus and blur on venture performance, which is measured by the attainment of initial profitability. We employ data from the Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics II (PSED II), and we find that focus does not have a significant effect, either directly or in combination with turbulence. However, the interaction between strategic blur and environmental turbulence is statistically significant. We conclude with implications for research and practice.

This paper aims to examine the factors, paths, and mechanisms influencing networking of Shanghai's high-tech industry with focus on the biomedical, new material, equipment manufacturing and electronic information. Based on the data from high-tech firms' annual reports by Shanghai's Science and Technology Commission, the results highlight firm development stage, firm scale, and industry position as the main factors promoting innovation networking. In addition, government intervention plays the largest role in the new material industry mainly through investment in innovation activities and taxation intervention in innovation network construction. The impact of firm ownership, spatial location, and intermediary services on the four high-tech industries' innovation networks is relatively smaller. Finally, this study summarises the impact mechanisms for innovation networking in Shanghai's high-tech industries.

This study uses a graphical evaluation review technology (GERT) network to construct an uncertainty measurement model of the technology transfer process. In addition, the science and technology data input from the 30 provinces and autonomous regions of the provinces in China are used to measure the uncertainty associated with technology transfer in each province. It is concluded that the uncertainty associated with technology transfer in China varies from region to region and has a negative correlation with the level of economic development. Thereafter, with the help of construction of uncertainty difference matrix, the policy recommendation is put forward, in which reducing 'target phase' uncertainty can largely promote transformation of science and technology.

The analysis of 206 survey questionnaires reflects that knowledge and resource heterogeneities significantly and positively affect interaction behaviour and innovation performance. Ecological heterogeneity has an inverted U-shaped effect on interaction behaviour and innovation performance. Cognitive heterogeneity has an inverted U-shaped effect on innovation performance but is insignificant to interaction behaviour. Interaction behaviour is significantly related to innovation performance as well as mediates the effects of partner heterogeneity except for cognitive heterogeneity. The presence of circular causality and self-reinforcing mechanisms between partner heterogeneity and innovation performance were first confirmed in our study. The study contributes to the theory of interactive innovation, partner heterogeneity, and innovation management literature. To practitioners in Chinese complex product R&D industry, this study advises to interact with the industry players at multiple levels, however, the gap with respect to cognition and geography must not be too high.

However, continued growth has made national R&D program governance complex and has created a chronic overlap in R&D investments. This study proposes a systematic approach for the effective management of Korea's national R&D programs. The discussion begins by reviewing each program's raison d'etre. Although a program's mission is often only vaguely described in the literature, this study devises a set of selected and structured components comprised of four essential dimensions: purpose, philosophy, definition, and goals. Mission fulfilment and uniqueness form a framework for a strategic program portfolio model. The study explains that a mission-based model enables the comprehensive life-cycle management of a set of programs. In addition, this study presents an empirical example to demonstrate the validity of the model and elicit its implications.

We use firm-level revenue and expenditure data to create industry level returns to an average manufacturing firm. We show that firms that perform both product and process innovations reap more than those that perform either process innovation or product innovation in isolation, and product-only innovators reap larger rewards than process-only innovators. The industrial profile of innovation in Canada ranks the transportation sector first, and the remaining top five industries are primary metals, petroleum-chemical-pharmaceuticals, food-beverages, plastics-rubber and wood. While Canada is no longer a country of just 'Hewers of wood and drawers of water', a recent $2.2 billion Federal program targets primarily the transportation-aerospace sector to the detriment of the less newsworthy sectors.
