    Ultrasonic potential in maintaining the quality and reducing the microbial load of minimally processed pomegranate

    查看更多>>摘要:Difficulty of Pomegranate fruit peeling and arils separation are the main motivations of progressive ready-to-eat pomegranate fresh arils industry. Also, extracted pomegranate arils are highly perishable due to water loss and microbial contamination expose. The aim of the current work was then to evaluate the effect of ultrasound for 15 and 30 min on maintenance of bioactive compounds and microbial load reduction of pomegranate arils cv. Rabbab. Treated arils were kept at 5 degrees C and analyzed during 15 days of storage. The most and least weight loss of arils obtained in control and 30 min treated samples, respectively. After 12 days of storage, all samples were decayed except those treated for 15 and 30 min. The ultrasound treatment significantly prevented degradation of anthocyanin and ascorbic acid compounds. Total phenol and antioxidant activity decreased during storage. At the end of storage, the most total phenol content (3898.6 mg GAE L-1) was found in arils treated for 30 min whereas the most anthocyanin (91.93 mg L-1), total antioxidant activity (82.65%), and ascorbic acid (2.53 mg L-1) were found in arils treated for 15 min. Ultrasound treated arils had lower microbial load (total mesophilic bacteria in control and 30-min treated samples) in each stage during storage. At the end of storage, the microbial load in treated and control arils was 0.7 and 0.2 Log CFU g(-1), respectively). Overall, ultrasound treatment effectively reduced weight loss and preserved bioactive compounds during storage.

    查看更多>>摘要:The binary nanomaterials and graphitic carbon based hybrid has been developed as an important porous nanomaterial for fabricating electrode with applications in non-enzymatic (bio) sensors. We report a fast synthesis of bimetal oxide particles of nano-sized manganese ferrite (MnFe2O4) decorated on graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) via a high-intensity ultrasonic irradiation method for C (30 kHz and 70 W/cm(2)). The nanocomposites were analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction, XPS, EDS, TEM to ascertain the effects of synthesis parameters on structure, and morphology. The MnFe2O4/GCN modified electrode demonstrated superior electrocatalytic activity toward the neurotransmitter (5-hydroxytryptamine) detection with a high peak intensity at +0.21 V. The appealing application of the MnFe2O4/GCN/GCE as neurotransmitter sensors is presented and a possible sensing mechanism is analyzed. The constructed electrochemical sensor for the detection of 5-hydroxytryptamine (STN) showed a wide working range (0.1-522.6 mu M), high sensitivity (19.377 mu A mu M-1 cm(-2)), and nano-molar detection limit (3.1 nM). Moreover, it is worth noting that the MnFe2O4/GCN not only enhanced activity and also promoted the electron transfer rate towards STN detection. The proposed sensor was analyzed for its real-time applications to the detection of STN in rat brain serum, and human blood serum in good satisfactory results was obtained. The results showed promising reproducibility, repeatability, and high stability for neurotransmitter detection in biological samples.

    Effects of ultrasonic conditions on the interfacial property and emulsifying property of cellulose nanoparticles from ginkgo seed shells

    查看更多>>摘要:Cellulose microparticles from ginkgo seed shells were treated by ultrasonic treatments within the selected output powders (150-600 W) and durations (10-60 min) to produce cellulose nanoparticles. The main aim of this study was to investigate effects of ultrasonic conditions on the interfacial property and emulsifying property of those cellulose nanoparticles. Compared to ultrasonic output powers, ultrasonic durations showed the greater influence on morphology and physical properties of cellulose nanoparticles. Atomic force microscopy revealed that noodle-like cellulose particles with 1100 nm in length gradually became the short rod-like nanoparticles with 300 nm in length with increasing of ultrasonic duration from 10 min to 60 min. Moreover, results of contact angles indicated that ultrasound could significantly improve hydrophobicity of cellulose nanoparticles. The interfacial shear rheology showed that although all cellulose nanoparticles exhibited the similar interface adsorption behavior which showed the initial lag-phase of adsorption, followed by the interface saturation, the time of this initial lag-phase was affected by ultrasonic conditions. The increase of ultrasonic duration and ultrasonic power could shorten the time of this initial lag-phase, suggesting the resulting cellulose nanoparticles easier adsorption at the O/W interface. It was probably attributed to its small size and high hydrophobicity induced by intense ultrasonic treatments. Meanwhile, the cellulose nanoparticles with small size and higher hydrophobicity exhibited the better emulsifying ability to stabilize oil-in-water emulsions due to the formation of the viscoelastic interfacial film. This study improved understanding about changes in interfacial and emulsifying properties of cellulose nanoparticles caused by ultrasonic treatments.

    Comparative study of luminescence and chemiluminescence in hydrodynamic cavitating flows and quantitative determination of hydroxyl radicals production

    查看更多>>摘要:Luminescence and chemiluminescence have been experimentally investigated in hydrodynamic cavitating flows. By using dedicated microdevices inserted inside a light tight box, photons counting has been made possible. Luminescence has been investigated with deionized water as the working fluid; chemiluminescence has resulted from cavitating alkaline luminol solutions, and has been correlated to hydroxyl radicals formation. For the first time, luminescent and chemiluminescent phenomena have been considered together on the same devices submitted to similar cavitating flow regimes. Degassed solutions enhance the luminescence and also the hydroxyl radical yield. Due to the small sizes of the channels, the lifetimes of the collapsing bubbles correspond to pseudo frequencies matching the range of optimal frequencies used in sonochemistry. New perspectives for the study of hydrodynamic cavitation as an advanced oxidation process are suggested.

    Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes by ultrasonic-assisted electrospray TiO2/graphene oxide on polyacrylonitrile/beta-cyclodextrin nanofibrous membranes

    查看更多>>摘要:Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) composite nanofibrous membranes immobilized with nano -titanium dioxide (TiO2) and graphene oxide (GO) were prepared by electrospinning and ultrasonic-assisted electrospinning. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed that TiO2 and GO were more evenly dispersed on the surface and inside of the nanofibers after 45 min of ultrasonic treatment. Adding TiO2 and GO reduced the fiber diameter; the minimum fiber diameter was 84.66 +/- 40.58 nm when the mass ratio of TiO2-to-GO was 8:2 (PAN/beta-CD nanofibrous membranes was 191.10 +/- 45.66 nm). Using the anionic dye methyl orange (MO) and the cationic dye methylene blue (MB) as pollutant models, the photocatalytic activity of the nanofibrous membrane under natural sunlight was evaluated. It was found that PAN/beta-CD/TiO2/GO composite nanofibrous membrane with an 8:2 mass ratio of TiO2-to-GO exhibited the best degradation efficiency for the dyes. The degradation efficiency for MB and MO were 93.52 +/- 1.83% and 90.92 +/- 1.52%, respectively. Meanwhile, the PAN/beta-CD/TiO2/GO composite nanofibrous membrane also displayed good antibacterial properties and the degradation efficiency for MB and MO remained above 80% after 3 cycles. In general, the PAN/beta-CD/TiO2/GO nanofibrous membrane is eco-friendly, reusable, and has great potential for the removal of dyes from industrial wastewaters.

The ultrasound technology has revolutionized the food processing industry with its wide application in various processes, serving as a sustainable and low-cost alternative. This non-destructive technology offers several advantages such as rapid processes, enhanced process efficiency, elimination of process steps, better quality product and retention of product characteristics (texture, nutrition value, organoleptic properties), improved shelf life. This review paper summarizes the various applications of ultrasound in different unit operations (filtration, freezing, thawing, brining, sterilization/pasteurization, cutting, etc.) and specific food divisions (meat, fruits and vegetables, cereals, dairy, etc.) along with, the advantages and drawbacks of the technology. The further scope of industrial implementation of ultrasound has also been discussed.

    Ultrasound-assisted thawing of frozen white yak meat: Effects on thawing rate, meat quality, nutrients, and microstructure

    查看更多>>摘要:The objective of this study was to assess the effects of ultrasound-assisted thawing (UAT) on the quality of longissimus dorsi muscles from white yak meat (WYM). Ultrasonic power levels of 0, 200, 400, and 600 W (frequency of 20 kHz) were used to assist thawing. The thawing rate, meat quality, nutrient substances, volatile compounds, and microstructure of the WYM were determined. The results showed that ultrasonic thawing treatment reduced thawing times by 30.95-64.28% compared to control. The meat quality results revealed that the thawing loss, cooking loss, L* and b* values, and pH values decreased significantly while the a* value and cutting force increased significantly (P < 0.05) at the lower 400 W power level compared with the control . In addition, the free amino acid (FAA), mineral , and vitamin (especially water-soluble vitamins) contents were significantly (P < 0.05) increased with the ultrasound treatment. UAT significantly (P < 0.05) increased the content of volatile compounds, an effect that was highest in the UAT-400 W group. Partial least squares discrimination analysis (PLS-DA) showed that 2,4-heptadienal was critical in distinguishing the UAT groups from the control. When the ultrasonic power was lower than 400 W, the muscle ce l l area was significantly (P < 0.05) increased but decreased when higher power was used. Therefore, UAT improves the thawing efficiency and quality of frozen WYM, particularly at a power level of 400 W, and these findings have potential applications in the meat industry.

    Ultrasonically prepared photocatalyst of W/WO3 nanoplates with WS2 nanosheets as 2D material for improving photoelectrochemical water splitting

    查看更多>>摘要:A sonochemical treatment has been an emerged technique as an interesting method for fabricating different photocatalysts with unique photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties. This study investigated the PEC performance of WO3 with WS2 nanosheets as a 2D material before calcination (WO3/WS2-90) and after calcination (WO3/ WS2-450) prepared with sonochemical treatment. The WS2 nanosheets were prepared from a liquid exfoliation phase with few-layer nanosheets, approximately 6.5 nm in thickness. The nanosheets were confirmed by UV-Vis spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. Further, XPS, RAMAN, and SEM-EDAX analyses indicated that, following calcination of the WO3/WS2 electrode, the WS2 nanosheets initially transformed to 2D-WO3. After depositing the WS2 nanosheets on the WO3, the photocurrent density increased substantially. The WO3/WS2-450 films after calcination showed a photocurrent density of 5.6 mA.cm(-2) at 1.23 V vs. Ag/AgCl, which was 3.1 and 7.2 times higher, respectively than those of the WO3/WS2-90 before calcination and pure WO3. Mott-Schottky and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analyses confirmed the fabrication of the WO3/WS2 photoanode after calcination. The deposition of WS2 nanosheets onto pure WO3 increased the donor concentration (24-fold), reduced the space charge layer (4.6-fold), and decreased the flat band potential (1.6-fold), which could all help improve the photoelectrochemical efficiency. Moreover, the incorporation of WO3 with WS2 nanosheets as a 2D material (WO3/WS2-450) enhanced the incident photon current efficiency (IPCE) by 55%. In addition, the applied-bias photon-to-current conversion efficiency of the WO3/WS2-450 films was approximately 2.26% at 0.75 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), which is 5.6 and 9 times higher, respectively than those of WO3/WS2-90 and pure WO3.

    Sono-hydro priming process (ultrasound modulated hydration): Modelling hydration kinetic during paddy germination

    查看更多>>摘要:Application of ultrasound technology in modulating the hydration process during paddy germination was analyzed in this study. The effect of hydropriming (24 h) and sono-hydro priming (ultrasound priming, 12 h) on the hydration behaviour of paddies was determined at different temperatures (25-40 degrees C). Ultrasound pulse was applied for 10 min after every one hour for sono-hydro priming. Germination potential and microstructure analysis of treated paddies were also performed. Downward concave curve observed in hydration process of paddies indicates initial high-water absorption through diffusion process. Sono-hydro priming process showed higher hydration rate compared to hydropriming. The changes in moisture content during hydration processes fitted to theoretical (Fick's model) and empirical model (Peleg model) exhibited high regression coefficient (R-2 > 0.95) indicating suitability for predicting hydration behaviour in both paddies for germination. The Peleg model adequately predicted saturation moisture content and sono-hydro priming efficiently increased the water absorption rate. Effective moisture diffusivity determined from Fick's diffusion model increased for sono-hydro priming. Activation energy estimated from effective moisture diffusivity required in sono-hydro priming (E-a = 20.32 and 19.19 KJ/mol respectively) for pigmented rice and non-pigmented rice was lower than hydropriming (E-a = 27.11 and 32.15 KJ/mol respectively). Both hydration processes were endothermic and non-spontaneous inferred from thermodynamic properties. Sono-hydro priming exhibited < 95% germination potential with shorter soaking time (12 h) owing to the high mass transfer rate. SEM micrograph revealed water absorption through various micro-cavities during sono-hydro priming. Thus, sono-hydro priming potentially reduced the soaking process (approximately 50%) with higher germination rate in paddies beneficial for commercial malting of grains.

    Effect of thermosonication on quality attributes of hog plum (Spondias mombin L.) juice

    查看更多>>摘要:The use of thermosonication (TS) technique to preserve the qualities of fruit juice as an alternative to conventional pasteurization has attracted research interest in recent times. In the present study, freshly prepared hog plum juice (control), and the juice samples subjected to pasteurization (90 degrees C for 60 s) and thermosonication (40 kHz, 400 W at 40, 50 and 60 degrees C each for 5, 10, 20 and 30 min) were each analyzed for physicochemical, bioactive, microbial and sensory properties. After treatment, no significant changes in pH, total soluble solids and titratable acidity were observed. Notably, TS at 40 and 50 degrees C significantly (p < 0.05) improved color parameters, cloudiness and browning index. Furthermore, thermosonication increased ascorbic acid (11.40-18.55%), total phenolic content (17.98-18.35%), carotenoids (2.19-4.30%), flavonoids (10-16%) and antioxidant activity (32.52-48.5%) relative to the control. Both treatments significantly reduced the microbial count to non-detectable level after processing, while sensory attributes slightly improved. However, TS treatment at 60 degrees C decreased most of the quality parameters. Results showed that TS can improve quality, safety and economic potential of hog plum juice as a feasible alternative to pasteurization.
