    CD3+ T-Lymphocytic Coeliac-Mesenteric Ganglioneuritis Associated with Colonic Torsion and Inflammatory Bowel Disease in an Arabian Broodmare

    查看更多>>摘要:? 2022 The Author(s)A 5-year-old Arabian broodmare with acute colic was diagnosed with lymphocytic ganglioneuritis of the coeliac-mesenteric ganglia and lymphocytic?plasmacytic enterocolitis resembling inflammatory bowel disease. No significant pathogens were identified by aerobic culture or histopathological examination. The ganglia were multifocally infiltrated with small lymphocytes that were immunopositive for CD3 and negative for CD20 and CD79a antigens, indicating CD3+ T-lymphocyte-mediated coeliac-mesenteric ganglioneuritis. The findings suggest immune-mediated inflammatory bowel disease resulting in disturbance of the autonomic nervous system in the gastrointestinal tract, as in ulcerative colitis in humans. Histopathological features in this case differ from those of equine enteric dysautonomia and chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction, which are characterized by neuronal degeneration and inflammation, respectively, and mostly affect the mural ganglion plexuses. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of CD3+ T-lymphocytic extramural enteric ganglioneuritis in equine inflammatory bowel disease.

    Septicaemic Listeriosis in a White-Faced Saki (Pithecia pithecia)

    查看更多>>摘要:? 2022 Elsevier LtdA 27-year-old female white-faced saki (Pithecia pithecia) died following an onset of vomiting and ptyalism. Necropsy revealed lesions of suppurative ventriculitis, choroid plexitis, periventricular encephalitis and meningitis with intralesional gram-positive coccobacilli and paired rods. The saki also had suppurative to mononuclear hepatitis, mild intestinal crypt necrosis, proliferative glomerulonephritis, aortic arteriosclerosis, pulmonary interstitial fibrosis, chronic mild epicarditis, ovarian medullary arteriopathy and a focal superficial cerebral fibrotic nodule with surrounding chronic mixed cell inflammation. Listeria monocytogenes was cultured from liver and spinal cord. Intralesional Listeria bacteria were immunolabelled in brain sections and real-time polymerase chain reaction of brain tissue detected L. monocytogenes. Whole genome multilocus sequence typing characterized the cultured bacterial isolates as sequence type 6 and clonal complex 6. A database search for related clinical and food listerial outbreaks identified genetically related isolates but, because these isolates were more than 20 alleles distant from the saki isolates, they were not a related cluster. Reports of listeriosis in non-human primates are infrequent, and when infections do occur, they tend to be haematogenous with the propensity to cause meningoencephalitis. This saki likely ingested environmental L. monocytogenes, which resulted in disease that may have been facilitated by pre-existing co-morbidities and age.

    Pathology of Salmonella enterica Subspecies enterica Serotype Typhimurium Infection in Chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera)

    查看更多>>摘要:? 2022 Elsevier LtdSepticaemia is the main pathological manifestation of Salmonella infection in chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera), although information on its pathology is limited. We now describe the gross, histological and immunohistochemical features of Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serotype Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) infection in ranched chinchillas. Eighty-five adult pregnant chinchillas had anorexia, prostration, weight loss, hyperthermia and abortion. Necropsy of 13 animals revealed splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, mesenteric lymphadenomegaly, prominent Peyer's patches, pulmonary oedema, white pinpoint lesions in multiple organs and petechiae in the urinary bladder. In all cases, histological lesions were consistent with septicaemia, characterized by acute necrotizing hepatitis, splenitis, lymphadenitis, cystitis, pneumonia, enterocolitis, gastritis and/or nephritis. Immunohistochemistry for Salmonella spp on seven cases revealed intralesional immunolabelling in all affected organs. Salmonella sp was isolated from liver, spleen, intestinal contents and blood of 10 chinchillas. Isolates of four animals were identified as S. Typhimurium.

    Natural SARS-CoV-2 Infection in a Free-Ranging Black-Tailed Marmoset (Mico melanurus) from an Urban Area in Mid-West Brazil

    查看更多>>摘要:? 2022 Elsevier LtdThe emergence of spillover pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2 is a risk to vulnerable human populations. We report natural SARS-CoV-2 infection in a free-ranging adult female black-tailed marmoset (Mico melanurus) from an urban area of Cuiabá, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The animal was found after a motor vehicle collision without previous clinical history. Necropsy confirmed polytrauma. Severe multifocal to coalescent haemorrhage and mild multifocal peribronchial lymphocytic hyperplasia were seen in lung sections. The alveolar septa were multifocally expanded by a few lymphocytes. Mild lymphocytic periportal hepatitis and interstitial nephritis were found. The lymphoid nodules of the large intestine showed marked lymphocytic hyperplasia. Infection by SARS-CoV-2 was established by viral RNA detection in a pool of nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swabs and liver samples. Immunohistochemistry detected the viral nucleocapsid protein in sections of lung, liver, spleen, lymph nodes and large intestine, and spike protein antigen in lung tissue. This is the first report of naturally occurring SARS-CoV-2 infection in a New World monkey. Platyrrhine species should be included as potential hosts of natural infection of SARS-CoV-2.

    Alimentary Tract Neoplasia in Captive Bearded Dragons (Pogona spp)

    查看更多>>摘要:? 2022There are multiple reports of gastric neuroendocrine carcinoma in bearded dragons (Pogona spp), but other types of alimentary neoplasia are rarely reported. In a retrospective study, we identified 51 cases of neoplasia, including gastric (n = 26), oral (n = 18), intestinal (n = 13), oesophageal (n = 3) and cloacal (n = 2) neoplasms. Round cell neoplasia was diagnosed in the alimentary tract in 14 cases, all of which had extra-alimentary involvement, most commonly in the liver, lung, spleen and kidney, and was considered to be the cause of death or euthanasia in all cases. Oral neoplasms included sarcoma, adenomatous polyp, round cell neoplasia, fibromatous epulis of periodontal ligament origin and myxoma. Apart from disseminated round cell neoplasia, all the oral neoplasms, including sarcomas, were not associated with death or euthanasia and had a good to excellent prognosis. Oesophageal neoplasms included round cell neoplasia. Gastric neoplasms included neuroendocrine carcinoma, round cell neoplasia, adenocarcinoma and sarcoma. Intestinal neoplasms included round cell neoplasia, sarcoma, adenocarcinoma and metastatic sarcoma. All oesophageal, gastric and intestinal neoplasms were associated with death or euthanasia and had a poor to grave prognosis. Cloacal neoplasms included round cell tumours and squamous cell carcinoma, and all were primary alimentary tumours except for the round cell tumours and one metastatic sarcoma. Round cell neoplasia and gastric neuroendocrine carcinoma were the most common diagnoses. Sarcomas and polyps were common in the oral cavity and rare to absent elsewhere. Adenocarcinoma was rare and only identified in the stomach and intestines.

    Vaccine-Associated Anaphylactic Shock in a Springer Spaniel Dog with Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy

    查看更多>>摘要:? 2022 Elsevier LtdA 5-year-old female Springer Spaniel dog was submitted for necropsy after sudden death following vaccination against Leptospira spp. Gross examination revealed a diffuse dark red discolouration of skeletal musculature, severe diffuse congestion of all the abdominal organs and a contracted spleen. Severe dilation and reduction in wall width was seen in the right ventricle and histological examination revealed multifocal replacement of the right ventricular myocardium by a large amount of fibrofatty tissue. Pathological changes were consistent with post-vaccinal anaphylactic shock in a dog with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), a rare condition typical of Boxer dogs but not previously reported in Springer Spaniels. Canine vaccine-associated adverse events are discussed and ARVC is compared with the corresponding human cardiac condition.

    Outbreaks of Acute Necrotic Enteritis and Haemolytic Crisis and Renal Disease Associated with Clostridium perfringens in Captive Toucans (Ramphastos spp)

    查看更多>>摘要:? 2022 Elsevier LtdFour toco toucans (Ramphastos toco), one channel-billed toucan (Ramphastos vitellinus) and one white-throated toucan (Ramphastos tucanus) died in two disease outbreaks in the same aviary in 2011 and 2016. Post-mortem examination revealed diffuse necrotic enteritis (NE) as the cause of death of five of these six birds. Clostridium perfringens was identified by culture and real-time multiplex PCR for C. perfringens α-, β-, ε- and ι-toxin genes in ligated intestine of one toucan from each outbreak. At another aviary, two keel-billed toucans (Ramphastos sulfuratus) died peracutely from severe haemolytic crisis with haemoglobinaemic nephrosis and cholestasis and acute tubulointerstitial nephritis. Mild NE was present in these birds and C. perfringens was demonstrated in liver by bacterial culture and real-time multiplex PCR for C. perfringens α-, β-, ε- and ι-toxin genes. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first description of outbreaks of NE associated with C. perfringens in captive toucans. Although haemolytic crisis has been reported in humans with C. perfringens type A septicaemia and hepatic abscesses, this presentation appears not to have been described in C. perfringens infections in toucans or other avian species. The factors causing C. perfringens proliferation and disease in the toucans were not identified. PCR for C. perfringens NetB toxin and enterotoxin genes performed retrospectively on one of the C. perfringens isolates from the second outbreak and on paraffin-embedded tissues from one dead toucan from the first outbreak was negative. With the current C. perfringens toxin typing scheme, C. perfringens type A was identified in the first two outbreaks.

    Subungual Pigmented Squamous Cell Carcinoma in a Dog

Histopathological evaluation revealed that the mass comprised neoplastic squamous cells with abundant cytoplasmic melanin pigment. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were positive for cytokeratin and negative for vimentin and ionized calcium-binding adaptor molecule 1, supporting a diagnosis of pigmented squamous cell carcinoma. To our knowledge, this is the first report of subungual pigmented squamous cell carcinoma in animals.

    Bilateral Plaque-Like White Matter Degeneration in Cerebral Septal Regions of a Chapman's Zebra (Equus quagga chapmani)

    查看更多>>摘要:? 2022 Elsevier LtdHistopathological examination of an approximately 19-year-old female Chapman's zebra (Equus quagga chapmani) revealed multifocal bilateral plaque-like lesions in rostral septal regions of the cerebrum. The centre of these lesions consisted of radiating, acicular eosinophilic structures, which were surrounded by rare glial cells. Spheroids were also seen around the lesions. Luxol fast blue and Bodian staining revealed loss of normal myelin and axonal structures within the plaque-like lesions. The glial cells surrounding the lesions were considered reactive astrocytes due to their immunoreactivity to vimentin, glial fibrillary acidic protein and alpha-smooth muscle actin. Based on these findings, the lesions were consistent with focal white matter degeneration localized in bilateral, rostral septal regions; these lesions have not been previously reported. The cause of the lesions was not determined despite the application of various histochemical stains.
