B-scan ultrasonography examination revealed a small, irregular, soft-textured mass in the bladder. Histopathologically, there was an incomplete fibrous pseudocapsule around the tumour tissue and although there was clear demarcation from the surrounding tissue, there was invasion of the capsule. Tumour cells proliferated in nests or cords of variable size, separated by fibrovascular tissue. The neoplastic cells were immunopositive for chromogranin A, synaptophysin and neuron-specific enolase, and electron microscopy revealed that they contained cytoplasmic secretory granules. On the basis of these findings, the tumour was diagnosed as a primary paraganglioma of the urinary bladder.

However, within the peafowl (Phasianinae) subfamily, there are only rare confirmed reports of MD. Here we report MD in an Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus), which clinically presented with hindlimb paraparesis and intraocular swelling of the right eye. Soft, off-white to tan masses within the right eye, sciatic nerves and coelomic cavity were identified at post-mortem examination which effaced the cranial pole of the kidneys and diffusely effaced the testes. Lymphoid neoplasia was identified histologically at all of these sites and there was extensive hepatic lymphoid cell infiltration, which had not been grossly evident. The T-cell origin of the lymphoid cells was confirmed by immunohistochemistry for CD3 antigen. A virulent strain of MDV 1 was detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction in DNA samples extracted from the kidney and testes. As MD is rare in peafowl it should be considered as a differential diagnosis for intraocular and coelomic masses with associated clinical signs.

An Experimental Dermal Oedema Model for Apx Toxins of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae

Existing models cause severe respiratory disease with pulmonary oedema, dyspnoea and severe thoracic pain, and careful monitoring and early intervention with euthanasia is, therefore, needed to avoid unnecessary suffering in experimental animals. As a potential replacement for the existing respiratory infection model, an in-vivo protocol was evaluated using intradermal or subcutaneous injection of different App strains and Apx toxins into the abdominal skin of pigs. High concentrations of serovar 1 and serovar 10 App induced diffuse visible dermal oedema and inflammation. Injection of Apx toxins alone did not adequately produce macroscopic lesions, although an influx of inflammatory cells was seen on histopathology. ApxI-producing strains of App induced more inflammation than ApxII- and ApxIII-producing strains. Induction of skin lesions by injection of App or Apx toxins was not sufficiently repeatable or discrete for a robust experimental model that could be used for assessment of novel interventions.

Pathogenicity of Porcine Circovirus Type 2e in Experimentally Infected Pigs

To investigate the pathogenicity of PCV2e, groups of conventional pigs were inoculated in one of three ways: with PCV2e only, with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and PCV2e, or with PCV2e and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV). Pigs were examined post mortem at 21 days post inoculation. Pigs in the M. hyopeumoniae/PCV2e group were inoculated intratracheally with M. hyopneumoniae at 4 weeks of age followed by an intranasal inoculation with PCV2e at 6 weeks of age. Pigs in the PCV2e/PRRSV group were inoculated intranasally with PCV2e and PRRSV at 6 weeks of age. Significant differences in PCV2e loads in blood or lymph nodes, or in the severity of lymphoid lesions, were not detected between the M. hyopneumoniae/PCV2e and PCV2e/PRRSV groups. All pigs co-infected with either M. hyopneumoniae/PCV2e or PCV2e/PRRSV developed mild porcine circovirus-associated disease (PCVAD), whereas none of the pigs infected with PCV2e alone developed PCVAD. Production of PCVAD in pigs therefore appears to require PCV2e infection simultaneously with an additional infectious agent such as M. hyopneumoniae or PRRSV for full disease expression in pigs. These results demonstrate that PCV2e is not associated with significant clinical disease as assessed by levels of PCV2e viraemia and severity of lymphoid lesions.

    Primary Intestinal Lymphoma in Rabbits

查看更多>>摘要:? 2022Neoplasms of the intestinal tract are uncommon in rabbits and primary lymphoma of the intestinal tract is rare. This case series is the first detailed description of primary intestinal lymphoma in rabbits. We reviewed four cases of primary intestinal lymphoma in rabbits aged 5–9.5 years old with an average age of 7.8 years. Neoplastic cells in three cases were large (8 μm diameter) while one case had intermediate cells (5 μm diameter). Neoplastic lymphocytes were of B-cell lineage and characterized by intense, multifocal, membranous immunoreactivity for CD79a and no immunoreactivity to CD3. Based on the Revised European-American Classification of Lymphoid Neoplasms/World Health Organization classification, three of the cases were consistent with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and the case with intermediate-sized neoplastic cells was consistent with lymphoblastic lymphoma.

A Retrospective Study of Pythiosis in Domestic Animals in Northeastern Brazil

查看更多>>摘要:? 2022 Elsevier LtdPythiosis is an endemic disease in northeastern Brazil and we now report the epidemiological, clinical and pathological findings in a retrospective study of naturally occurring cases in domestic animals. From January 1985 to December 2020, the Laboratory of Animal Pathology of the Federal University of Campina Grande examined 13,542 tissue samples from necropsies and biopsies. Among these samples, 306 were diagnosed as pythiosis: 195 cases in horses, 75 in sheep, 19 in dogs, six in mules, four in cattle, three in cats, two in goats, one in a donkey and one in an ostrich. Affected equids had lesions in the skin, mammary glands and nasal cavities. Affected sheep had cutaneous, nasal and digestive lesions while cattle and goats had cutaneous lesions. Carnivores developed lesions, mainly in the alimentary tract, of sufficient severity to cause death or result in euthanasia. The single affected bird had lesions in the alimentary tract and surgical excision resulted in remission. The disease had a long and life-threatening clinical course in most affected species but resolved spontaneously in cattle. Clinical signs were directly related to the location of the lesions, which were invariably characterized by chronic inflammation associated with intralesional hyphae. Veterinary clinicians and pathologists should be familiar with the clinicopathological features of pythiosis and the wide range of susceptible animal species.
