    Outcome of thoracolumbar surgical feline intervertebral disc disease

    查看更多>>摘要:Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome and prognosis of thoracolumbar feline intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) treated by surgical decompression. Methods This was a multi-institutional retrospective study evaluating the age, breed, sex, body weight, presenting complaint, neuroanatomic diagnosis at presentation, diagnostic imaging results, surgery performed and the overall outcome at discharge and at recheck. Bivariable associations between variables were assessed using the Kruskal-Wallis test (age and grade of IVDD at presentation) and Fisher's exact test (grade of IVDD at presentation and outcome). Results A total of 35 cats met the inclusion criteria for the study. The most frequently reported clinical sign was difficulty walking (54.2%). The majority of cats presented with an L4-S3 localization (57%). The most common site of intervertebral disc herniation (IVDH) was at L6-L7 (34%). The majority of feline patients that received surgery had a positive outcome at the time of discharge (62.5%; n = 20/32) and at the time of the 2-week recheck (91.3%; n = 21/23). No association was identified between the age of the patient and the grade of IVDD. No association was identified between the presenting grade of IVDD and the clinical outcome at the time of discharge or at the time of recheck evaluation. Conclusions and relevance Cats undergoing spinal decompressive surgery for thoracolumbar IVDH appear to have a favorable prognosis independent of the initial presenting grade of IVDD. A larger sample size and a longer length of follow-up is necessary to obtain statistical associations between the presenting grade of IVDD and overall clinical outcome.

    Ultrasonographic assessment of the caudal vena cava diameter in cats during blood donation

    查看更多>>摘要:Objectives Ultrasonography of the caudal vena cava (CVC) has been previously established to assess fluid status in dogs but not in cats. The aim of this study was to determine CVC diameter changes during feline blood donation. Methods Inter- and intra-observer variability were assessed in 11 client-owned cats. Minimal and maximal CVC diameters were assessed longitudinally in the subxiphoid view (SV) and right paralumbar view (PV), and transversely in the right hepatic intercostal view (HV). Eighteen client-owned, healthy, anaesthetised cats were evaluated during 21 blood donation procedures of 10 ml/kg in the same anatomical locations before (T0) and after (T1) blood donation, and after volume resuscitation with 30 ml/kg lactated Ringer's solution (T2). The CVC index was calculated. Results Intra-observer variability was acceptable for all probe positions, except for the HV, whereas inter-observer variability was considered unacceptable for all probe positions. Complete measurements were obtained during 21 blood donations at T0, T1 and T2 at the SV, during 18/21 blood donations at the HV and during 16/21 blood donations at the PV. At the SV, the minimal CVC diameter between T1 and T2 (P <0.001), and the maximal CVC diameter between T0 and T1 and between T1 and T2 (P <0.001) were significantly different. At the HV, the minimal vertical diameter, maximal vertical diameter and minimal horizontal diameter were different between all timepoints (P <0.001). The maximal horizontal diameter was different between T1 and T2 (P = 0.002). At the PV, both diameters were different between all timepoints (P <0.001). The CVC index was not different between timepoints. Conclusion and relevance Significant probe position dependent CVC diameter changes with marked overlap were observed before and after blood donation, and after fluid bolus. No absolute CVC diameter could be used to indicate hypovolaemia. Ultrasonographic assessment of the feline CVC is highly operator-dependent. The CVC index is not useful in cats.

    Field safety experience with an autologous cancer vaccine in tumor-bearing cats: a retrospective study of 117 cases (2015-2020)

    查看更多>>摘要:Objectives The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and severity of adverse events (AEs) reported from use of an adjuvanted whole-cell autologous cancer vaccine in cats with solid tumors under field conditions. Methods The case accession database at Torigen Pharmaceuticals was searched to identify client-owned cats that underwent biopsy or surgical resection of their primary tumor, had histologic confirmation of neoplasia and received at least one subcutaneous dose of an adjuvanted whole-cell autologous cancer vaccine. Records were reviewed for any reported AEs. Results In total, 117 cats met the inclusion criteria and received 422 doses of autologous cancer vaccine. Six (5.1%) cats had seven reported AEs, with the majority of these (85.7%) being characterized as grade 1 or 2 (mild) and resolving without medical intervention. Conclusions and relevance AEs were infrequent in cats treated with an adjuvanted whole-cell autologous cancer vaccine under typical field use conditions. This form of active cancer immunotherapy appears to be well tolerated by cats and may represent a treatment option for owners who are concerned about AEs associated with chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Additional studies are warranted to determine the efficacy of this form of individualized immunotherapy in cats with solid tumors.

    Phenotypic characterisation of paroxysmal dyskinesia in Sphynx cats

    查看更多>>摘要:Objectives The aim of this study was to identify the phenotypic features of a paroxysmal dyskinesia observed in Sphynx cats. Methods The owners of affected Sphynx cats were invited to provide video footage of abnormal episodes for review. Those that demonstrated episodes consistent with paroxysmal dyskinesia were then invited to complete an online questionnaire designed to allow further characterisation. Results Ten Sphynx cats were included in the study. All affected cats were <4 years of age at the onset of the episodes (range 0.5-4.0). The episodes had a duration of <5 mins in 9/10 cats (range 0.5-10), while episode frequency was variable between and within individual cats. The episodes were characterised by impaired ambulation due to muscle hypertonicity, most commonly affecting the hips and pelvic limbs (9/10) and shoulders and thoracic limbs (8/10). The head and neck (6/10), tail (5/10), and back and abdomen (3/10) were also involved in some cats. Sudden movement, excitement and stress were identified as possible triggers for the episodes in three cats. Therapeutic intervention was not attempted in 7/10 cases, although two cats were reported to become free of the episodes while receiving acetazolamide. The two cats that were followed beyond 2 years from onset entered spontaneous remission. None of the owners believed that the abnormal episodes had affected the quality of life of their cat. Conclusions and relevance The phenotype of paroxysmal dyskinesia in Sphynx cats presented in this study appears to share similarities with paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia described in human classification systems. Some cats appear to achieve episode freedom spontaneously. Subsequent research should focus on evaluating response to treatment and determining an underlying genetic cause.

    Feline urinary incontinence: a retrospective case series (2009-2019)

    查看更多>>摘要:Objectives The objective of this retrospective study was to describe the feline population presented for urinary incontinence at a veterinary teaching hospital between 2009 and 2019, with a particular focus on cats with a non-neurologic underlying cause. Methods The medical records of cats diagnosed with urinary incontinence were retrospectively evaluated. Signalment, clinical presentation, results of diagnostic tests, diagnosis of the underlying cause and treatments were recorded. When information was available, outcome was recorded and follow-ups divided into three time frames (0-1 week, 1 week to 3 months and >3 months). Results Thirty-five cats were presented with urinary incontinence. Of these, 18 cats with complete medical records presented urinary incontinence of non-neurologic origin. The most common clinical signs at presentation were urine leakage while resting (12/18), urine-soiled perineum (8/18), urine dribbling (8/18) and no spontaneous micturition (5/18). The most common underlying cause was urethral obstruction (67%; 12/18), with a majority due to urethral strictures (58%; 7/12). Other causes were suspected inflammation (2/12), neoplasia (1/12), urolithiasis (1/12) and foreign body (1/12). In 8/10 cats in which it was performed, cystoscopy and contrast cystourethrography were the methods that led to the diagnosis. Twelve cats with urethral obstruction underwent interventional procedures, resulting in complete resolution of incontinence in 7/12 and improvement in 1/12. Urinary tract infection was a common complication after 3 months (4/18). Conclusions and relevance When incontinence of non-neurologic origin is suspected in a cat, urethral obstruction should be considered. Advanced imaging studies (cystoscopy and contrast studies) are useful for diagnosis. A good prognosis was reported in cats undergoing interventional procedures with no long-term treatment.

    Use of mechanical thresholds in a model of feline clinical acute pain and their correlation with the Glasgow Feline Composite Measure Pain Scale scores

    查看更多>>摘要:Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of mechanical thresholds (MT), measured with the SMALGO (Small Animal ALGOmeter), and to determine whether there was a correlation between MT and Glasgow Feline Composite Measure Pain Scale (CMPS-Feline) scores in cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy. Methods Client-owned cats undergoing flank ovariohysterectomy were recruited. Pain scores for the pre- and postoperative periods were obtained using the CMPS-Feline in each cat by two independent investigators (A and B). Following CMPS-Feline scoring, MT were measured with the SMALGO, in the surgical area, pre- and postoperatively, only by investigator A. Each cat served as its own control for the comparison of pre- and postoperative variables. Reliability statistics were used to assess the level of inter-observer agreement (A vs B) with respect to pre- and postoperative CMPS-Feline scores, while Spearman's correlation statistics were used to analyse the relationship between MT and CMPS-Feline scores. Results Twenty-nine cats completed the study. Preoperative MT (340 g [range 108-691]) were significantly higher than postoperatively (233 g [range 19-549]; P = 0.001). CMPS-Feline scores were not found to differ significantly between the preoperative period (2 [range 0-7] for investigator A and 3.2 +/- 2.3 for investigator B) and postoperative period (2 [range 0-10] for investigator A and 3 [range 0-8] for investigator B) for either investigator. Reliability statistics revealed that the level of inter-observer agreement with respect to CMPS-Feline was fair for the preoperative assessments but poor for the postoperative evaluations. There was no correlation between MT and CMPS-Feline scores. Conclusions and relevance Although there was no correlation with CMPS-Feline scores performed at the same timepoint, MT increased postoperatively vs baseline. Assuming that, despite analgesia, susceptibility of the surgical area to mechanical stimulation would increase after surgery, this finding suggests that MT might be useful to assess feline surgical pain. The poor level of inter-observer agreement with respect to postoperative CMPS-Feline scores highlights the potential limitations of this scale.

    Strontium 90 plesiotherapy for the treatment of eyelid squamous cell carcinoma in eight cats

    查看更多>>摘要:Objectives Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common eyelid tumour in cats. The main treatment is extensive surgery and the cosmetic outcome can be worrisome for some owners. Strontium 90 (ST-90) plesiotherapy is a therapeutic modality used for superficial tumours, including SCC. The aim of this study was to describe the use and response of feline eyelid SCC to ST-90 plesiotherapy either as single treatment or as adjuvant therapy following surgery. Methods A referral centre clinical database was searched for all cats diagnosed with SCC located on an eyelid. Cats treated with ST-90 plesiotherapy were included. The response to treatment was evaluated visually every 4-6 weeks until complete healing and based on response evaluation criteria in solid tumours (RECIST). Descriptive statistics of the survival were applied to the data collected. Results Eight cats treated between 2014 and 2017 met the inclusion criteria. The median age was 10.8 years. In six cases, ST-90 was used as the only treatment modality, while in two cats it was used as an adjuvant to surgery. Four cats received a single protocol and four a hypofractionated protocol. In the six cats in which ST-90 was used as the primary treatment, the response was 100%. Four cats died at a median time of 9 months (3-17 months) after ST-90 due to causes unrelated to SCC. Of the remaining four cats, three had no signs of recurrence at a median time of 34 months and one was lost to follow-up at 17 months with no signs of recurrence. Conclusions and relevance This small study showed that ST-90 can be used for treatment of eyelid SCC with good therapeutic and cosmetic outcomes.

    Evaluation of the effect of phenobarbital administration on the biochemistry profile, with a focus on serum liver values, in epileptic cats

    查看更多>>摘要:Objectives Phenobarbital (PB) is the most common antiseizure drug (ASD) used for the management of feline epilepsy. In dogs, PB is known to cause serum liver enzyme induction and hepatotoxicity, especially after administration long term or in high concentrations. In cats, insufficient evidence is available to draw similar conclusions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of PB administration on the serum biochemistry profile of epileptic cats. As an additional objective, other adverse effects arising, related to PB treatment, were recorded. Methods Medical records of four veterinary centres were retrospectively reviewed for epileptic cats receiving PB treatment. Cats were included if they had a diagnosis of idiopathic epilepsy or structural epilepsy; a normal baseline serum biochemistry profile; at least one follow-up serum biochemistry profile; no concurrent disease or had not received medication that could possibly influence liver function or lead to serum liver enzyme induction. Alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate transaminase and gamma-glutamyl transferase activities, and total bilirubin, bile acids, glucose, albumin, total protein, urea and creatinine concentrations before and during PB administration were recorded. PB serum concentration was also recorded, when available. Results Thirty-three cats (24 males, nine females) with a median age of 3 years (range 2 months to 12 years) met the inclusion criteria. Idiopathic or structural epilepsy was diagnosed in 25 (76%) and eight (24%) cats, respectively. The follow-up period ranged from 9 to 62 months. This study found an increase in ALT in three cats, possibly related to a PB serum concentration >30 mu g/ml. No statistically significant increase in serum liver enzymes or other evaluated biochemistry parameters was found by comparing pre- and post-treatment parameters. Conclusions and relevance PB administration did not result in hepatic enzyme induction or other biochemical abnormalities in cats. This strengthens the safety profile of PB as an ASD in cats.

    Double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of venlafaxine to treat behavioural disorders in cats: a pilot study

    查看更多>>摘要:Objectives Venlafaxine, a specific inhibitor of both noradrenaline and serotonin, is commonly used in human medicine to treat depression, anxiety and social phobia. Its formulation in small granules renders it interesting to test on cats, which are usually reluctant to take medication. Venlafaxine was administered at 1 mg/kg for 60 days, using a double-blind, placebo-controlled protocol, to cats aged > 6 months exhibiting aggressiveness, fear or house-soiling. Methods After one cat's withdrawal, 21 cats were included in the study: 11 in the venlafaxine group and 10 in the placebo group. Three consultations were conducted, on day 0, day 30 and day 60. Each visit consisted of (1) veterinarian- and owner-based scoring of the cat's behavioural improvement; (2) scoring of the cat's compliance with removal from its carrier and compliance with manipulation; and (3) owner scoring of the ease of administration and recording of the potential adverse effects of the treatment. Results Improvement was significantly higher in the venlafaxine group; as early as day 30, according to the veterinarian scoring, and at day 60, according to both the veterinarian and owner scoring. In contrast, neither the removal nor the manipulation scores were significantly different between the two treatment groups. Venlafaxine seemed to improve all three studied signs, as early as day 30 for fear and aggressiveness, and at day 60 for house-soiling. The adverse effects of venlafaxine were limited to drowsiness in one cat. All cats tolerated the treatment well during the 60-day period. Conclusions and relevance These results suggest that venlafaxine is efficient in treating several behavioural problems and is easy to administer. More studies should be conducted to explore its effects at different dosages on specific diagnoses.
