    Magnesium Sheet: Automotive Applications and Future Opportunities

    查看更多>>摘要:The prototype applications of magnesium sheet reviewed in the present paper, suggest that magnesium sheet can successfully reduce the mass of automobile components. The highest probability for initial applications will likely be in vehicle closures (e.g. doors, hoods, decklids, liftgates) where replacement of steel or aluminum assemblies is relatively easy and does not require complete redesign of the vehicle structure. Based on the current status of forming and joining technologies, the initial applications at any reasonable automotive volume will likely be inner panels where hemming of magnesium outer panels is not required. One issue which has not been addressed in detail in the present paper is the corrosion resistance of magnesium sheet. This includes the ability to withstand corrosive environments during manufacturing (e.g. pretreating and painting) as well as in service. In addition, the galvanic corrosion of assemblies made from mixed materials will be an important issue especially if a closure will be made with an aluminum or composite outer panel, a magnesium inner, aluminum or magnesium reinforcements, and then attached to a steel vehicle. This makes isolation during joining especially critical to ensure no degradation in performance due to galvanic corrosion effects.
