查看更多>>摘要:Abstract The new species Fictor platypapillata was isolated from dung beetle Oniticellus cinctus (Scarabaeidae), collected from the district Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh, India. Fictor platypapillata sp. n. is described based on morphology, morphometric and molecular characterization, supplemented with scanning electron microscopy observations. The new species is characterized by two female morphs based on stomatal dimorphism: α morph with left subventral wall having 14 denticles, six low conical and eight elongated finger-like, slender denticles separated by a deep groove; inner wall of gymnostom with linearly arranged warts; β morph with inner wall of gymnostom lacking warts; dorsal and right subventral stegostomal walls having large, slender teeth with hook-shaped apical end. Genital sensilla eight pairs with v5 pair flattened, button-shaped, located ventrally. The phylogenetic analyses revealed significant congruence, especially in the position of the subordinate taxa of genus Fictor that shows polyphyly by both Bayesian inference and minimum evolution methods. The taxonomy of the genus is updated with a valid species list along with their geographical mapping.
查看更多>>摘要:Abstract Regardless of the highly efficient anthelmintics available and the control measures taken by dog owners and veterinarians, gastrointestinal parasites, especially zoonotic helminths, are still abundant in dogs and pose a health risk to humans. Free-ranging dogs in rural areas can be an important source of helminth infection. The aims of the present work were to collect scats of rural dogs, determine the environmental contamination caused by helminth infections among rural dogs of Western Estonia, analyse how diet affects helminth infection rate and compare the findings to a previous study focusing on dog helminths in urban areas of Estonia. To differentiate the scats of dogs from other sympatric canids, a genetic method was applied. Of 328 samples, genetic analysis identified 84 scats belonging to dogs, of which 87.0% were infected with helminths. A high proportion of rural dog scats harboured eggs of Taeniidae (65.5%), followed by Trichuris spp./Eucoleus spp. (15.5%), Uncinaria stenocephala (14.7%) and Toxocara canis (4.3%). Coinfections occurred in 34.5% of the samples, being the most common between Taeniidae and U. stenocephala (41.4%). The intensity model indicated higher helminth infection rate in rural dogs preying on rodents and game. In comparison to urban dogs, rural dogs were nine times more likely to be infected with intestinal parasites. These results emphasize the need to implement measures to reduce helminth infections in dogs living in rural areas of Western Estonia. Among a complex of measures to be taken, we suggest that it is also important to diagnose which gastrointestinal parasite species infect dogs to determine specific anthelmintic treatment against these parasites.
查看更多>>摘要:Abstract Root-lesion nematodes (Pratylenchus spp.) are a group of economically important pathogens that have caused serious economic losses in many crops. In 2019, root-lesion nematodes were recovered from tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) root samples collected from Sichuan Province, People's Republic of China (PRC). Extracted nematodes were disinfected, and one individual female was cultured on a carrot disc for propagation at 25 °C by parthenogenesis and designated the SC isolate. Afterwards, the isolate was identified on the basis of morphometric and molecular markers. Both morphometric characters and molecular analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region gene (ITS) of ribosomal DNA, the D2-D3 expansion region of the 28S rDNA gene and the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (mtDNA-COI) gene revealed that the species of root-lesion nematode was Pratylenchus scribneri. The Bayesian tree inferred from the ITS rDNA, 28S rDNA and mtDNA-COI gene sequences also showed that this isolate formed a highly supported clade with other P. scribneri isolates. The pathogenicity of the root-lesion nematode SC isolate on tomato was assessed, showing that tomato was a suitable host for P. scribneri. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of P. scribneri on tomato in Sichuan Province, PRC. These are also the first molecular data obtained from P. scribneri on tomato in the PRC, and the pathogenicity of P. scribneri to tomato was studied for the first time. This study provides scientific data for the detection, identification and control of tomato root-lesion nematode disease.
查看更多>>摘要:Abstract At a routine health check of a female peregrine falcon, 23 trematodes preliminary identified as Prosthogonimus sp. were removed from the bursa of Fabricius. Based on morphological and molecular examination, a new species, Prosthogonimus falconis, was described. The pear-shaped flukes were 4.3–6.9 mm long, with greatest width posterior to testes. Tegumental spines measuring between 17 and 21 μm long covered the whole body. Length and width ratio of oral to ventral suckers were 1:1.3. Extracaecal, multifollicular vitelline glands commenced prior to acetabulum and terminated posterior to testes. Eggs in the distal uterus measured 21 × 12 μm. Molecular analysis of internal transcribed spacer 2, cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 gene regions revealed that the new species described here is phylogenetically closest to Prosthogonimus cuneatus and Prosthogonimus pellucidus clusters.
查看更多>>摘要:Abstract The prevalence of vector-associated parasitic infections is high in central-southern Italy. The deltaic coastal plain of the Volturno River has been suspected, by veterinary practitioners, to have a high accidental incidence of Dirofilaria repens. Thus, the goal of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of dirofilariasis and other coinfections frequently described in dogs living in the Volturno area. Blood samples of 100 clinical asymptomatic dogs were examined using a Knott's technique and polymerase chain reaction in order to identify microfilariae. Other vector-borne coinfections were also investigated using ELISA kits. The results were analysed using statistical and Geographic Information System (GIS) software. Microfilariae of D. repens were detected in 10% of the dogs surveyed, with a presence of antibodies against Ehrlichia canis (4/10) and Dirofilaria immitis (1/10). Such high incidence should be considered in light of the zoonotic potential for D. repens and the support for more regular use of repellents to prevent the spread of this disease. The GIS analyses indicated that the study area provides suitable conditions to sustain populations of mosquito vectors and D. repens parasites throughout much of the year.

查看更多>>摘要:Abstract Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) of the genera Steinernema and Heterorhabditis have demonstrated great potential as useful bio-control agents in the management of certain important soil-inhabiting insect pests of agricultural crops. In a survey of nematodes associated with organic honeybush cultivation, soil samples were obtained from nine organic honeybush plots, which are located in the Bredasdorp area of the Western Cape province of South Africa. The EPNs were isolated from soil by baiting with larvae of Galleria mellonella (greater wax moth) and identified by the amplification of the internal transcribed spacer region using the primer set TW81 and AB28. EPNs were abundant in the honeybush orchards, accounting for about 50% of the sampled fields and five EPN species were identified including Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, Heterorhabditis safricana, Steinernema khoisanae,. Steinernema nguyeni, Oscheius sp. and an unknown EPN, therefore suggesting a substantial diversity of EPNs in the sampled fields. A 100% mortality of infected G. mellonella larvae was recorded within 48 h of exposure to the nematodes. However, although these EPNs have been previously reported in South Africa, it is the first time they are found in such diversity on a conservative tillage management system in organic honeybush cultivation.

查看更多>>摘要:Abstract A new species of dorylaimid nematode, Aporcelinus abeokutaensis sp. n., collected from a watermelon field in Nigeria, is described, illustrated and molecularly (D2–D3 28S ribosomal DNA) studied. It is characterized by its 1.18–1.52-mm-long body, lip region offset by weak constriction, 15.5–17.5 μm broad with perioral liplets, odontostyle 18–21.5 μm long at its dorsal side or 1.1–1.3 times the lip region diameter, neck 333–401 μm long, pharyngeal expansion occupying 45–51% of total neck length, uterus simple and 0.7–1.5 times the corresponding body diameter long, V = 48–53, tail conical with finely rounded tip (33–52 μm long, c = 26–41, c′ = 1.3–1.9) and a variably distinct dorsal concavity, and male unknown. Molecular analysis reveals that the new species grouped with other species of Aporcelinus in a highly supported clade, confirming the monophyly of the genus.
查看更多>>摘要:Abstract Natural selection should favour parasite genotypes that manipulate hosts in ways that enhance parasite fitness. However, it is also possible that the effects of infection are not adaptive. Here we experimentally examined the phenotypic effects of infection in a snail–trematode system. These trematodes (Atriophallophorus winterbourni) produce larval cysts within the snail's shell (Potamopyrgus antipodarum); hence the internal shell volume determines the total number of parasite cysts produced. Infected snails in the field tend to be larger than uninfected snails, suggesting the hypothesis that parasites manipulate host growth so as to increase the space available for trematode reproduction. To test the hypothesis, we exposed juvenile snails to trematode eggs. Snails were then left to grow for about one year in 800-l outdoor mesocosms. We found that uninfected males were smaller than uninfected females (sexual dimorphism). We also found that infection did not affect the shell dimensions of males. However, infected females were smaller than uninfected females. Hence, infection stunts the growth of females, and (contrary to the hypothesis) it results in a smaller internal volume for larval cysts. Finally, infected females resembled males in size and shape, suggesting the possibility that parasitic castration prevents the normal development of females. These results thus indicate that the parasite is not manipulating the growth of infected hosts so as to increase the number of larval cysts, although alternative adaptive explanations are possible.
查看更多>>摘要:Abstract Gyrodactylus sphinx Dmitrieva & Gerasev, 2000 is the only species of Gyrodactylus originally described from Aidablennius sphynx (Valenciennes) in the Black Sea. In the present study, monogeneans similar to G. sphinx are reported from the same host and from two other species of Blenniidae from the Black Sea, as well as from the Mediterranean Sea. This study aims to verify the taxonomic status of the specimens found in different hosts and localities, other than the type ones of G. sphinx. Twenty-two measurements of the haptoral structures of 169 gyrodactylids were used for the morphological study. Morphometric variability between different samples was analysed using analysis of variance, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and principal component analysis (PCA). Molecular studies were carried out using the nuclear internal transcribed spacer 2 and 5.8S ribosomal DNA regions. Network, Bayesian phylogenetic and species delimitation analyses were performed to infer the number of taxonomic units and the phylogeographic relationships occurring within and among them. MANOVA revealed a significant dependence of the morphometry of hamuli and marginal hooks on host species and regions, but a clear differentiation between samples was not confirmed by PCA. Moreover, the ranges of all dimensions overlapped between samples. However, molecular analyses suggested the occurrence of at least two taxonomic entities. The most common entity was present in individuals of the Black and Mediterranean seas, and is described here as Gyrodactylus gerasevi n. sp., whereas a second entity recognized as a G. sphinx was found only in individuals from two localities off Crimea. The monophyletic cluster grouping of these two species was placed within a large clade that also included a separate sister cluster with seven other species of the Gyrodactylus orecchiae cross-ocean species group.
查看更多>>摘要:Abstract Tetraspanins are a superfamily of transmembrane proteins that in flatworms have structural roles in the development, maturation or stability of the tegument. Several tetraspanins are considered as potential candidates for vaccines or drugs against helminths. Monopisthocotylean monogeneans are ectoparasites of fish that are health hazards for farmed fish. The aim of this study was to identify in silico putative tetraspanins in the genomic datasets of four monopisthocotylean species. The analysis predicted and classified 40 tetraspanins in Rhabdosynochus viridisi, 39 in Scutogyrus longicornis, 22 in Gyrodactylus salaris and 13 in Neobenedenia melleni, belonging to 13 orthologous groups. The high divergence of tetraspanins made it difficult to annotate their function. However, a conserved group was identified in different metazoan taxa. According to this study, metazoan tetraspanins can be divided into 17 monophyletic groups. Of the 114 monogenean tetraspanins, only seven were phylogenetically close to tetraspanins from non-platyhelminth metazoans, which suggests that this group of proteins shows rapid sequence divergence. The similarity of the monopisthocotylean tetraspanins was highest with trematodes, followed by cestodes and then free-living platyhelminths. In total, 27 monopisthocotylean-specific and 34 flatworm-specific tetraspanins were identified. Four monogenean tetraspanins were orthologous to TSP-1, which is a candidate for the development of vaccines and a potential pharmacological target in trematodes and cestodes. Although studies of tetraspanins in parasitic flatworms are scarce, this is an interesting group of proteins for the development of new methods to control monogeneans.
