Early stages (scyphistomae, strobilae, ephyrae, postephyrae, and young medusae) of the species were compared with those of several other semaeostomes currently assigned to Ulmaridae, Pelagiidae, and Cyaneidae. Juveniles of P. camtschatica did not strictly conform with characters of those of any of these families, and appeared intermediate between Cyaneidae and Ulmaridae. A new family, Phacellophoridae, is proposed to accommodate camtschatica.

Taxonomic references given after each name pertain to the original description with author, year and pages; type locality; type depository and chronological list of synonyms. Complete distributional information from the literature is listed for each species. A total of 81 species-group names in 2 genera are listed for Bolitophilidae, of which 65 are taxonomically valid. For Diadocidiidae, 31 species-group names in 2 genera are listed, of which 26 are taxonomically valid. The following taxonomic changes are made: Bolitophila pulveris Lewis, 1969 is removed from Bolitophilidae,Palaeodocidia Sasakawa, 2004 is treated as syn. nov. of Diadocidia Ruthe, 1831, Diadocidia bifurcata Fedotova & Perkovsky, 2004 is removed from Diadocidiidae and transferred to Cecidomyiidae.

The other, Neocypholaelaps ampullula (Berlese), originally described from Indonesia, is reported for the first time in Sri Lanka. Complementary morphological information about this species is provided based on the specimens collected in this study. A discussion is presented about the spermathecal apparatus of Neocypholaelaps species.

However, there has been rapid progress over the past decade or so, which is likely to continue, undoubtedly leading to the erection of new family-group names. One such family, Odontobutidae, was erected by Hoese and Gill (1993) for several Asiatic freshwater genera. Recently, the spelling of this taxon has been challenged (Kottelat, 2001; Chen etal., 2002). According to Chen et al. (2002: 233): "Although commonly spelled Odontobutidae, a family-group name based on the genus group name Odontobutis should be spelled Odontobutididae as the stem of the genus group name is odontobutid- (ICZN art. 29). The spelling Odontobutidae can be retained under ICZN art. 29.3.1.1 only if it is the "prevailing usage", but ICZN is logically flawed on this point as it does not provide a tool to objectively decide what is the "prevaihng usage". Both spellings are in use, and it seems thus logical to stick to the letter of the ICZN."
