查看更多>>摘要:Sampling between 1999 and 2007 of the recent ostracod fauna of Lake Biwa, an ancient lake located in Japan, produced ten Cyprididae and one Ilyocyprididae species. One Cyprididae species, belonging to the genus Ilyodromus is described herein, Ilyodromus intermedius Okubo n. sp., and Bradleytriebella lineata (Victor & Fernando, 1981c) is redescribed. One Cyprididae species is a new record for Japan, namely Stenocypris malayica Victor & Fernando, 1981a, while seven others are new records for Lake Biwa.The family Ilyocyprididae is represented by only one species in Lake Biwa, Ilyocypris salebrosa Stepanaitys, 1960. The Lake Biwa population of this species is the first record of males and they are described in this paper. Including this study, forty ostracod species have now been reported from Lake Biwa. Most species (70%) were found at depths of less than 1 meter. Only four species were found below 44 m, the mean depth of the north basin.
查看更多>>摘要:Fifteen year ago a draft BioCode was presented to the taxonomic community (Greuter et al. 1996). There is now a new version, published in Taxon (Greuter et al. 2011) and available online on the International Committee on Biological Nomenclature website as well as that of the International Commision for Zoological Nomenclature. Has the BioCode matured since it was last put forward? Was it ahead of its time in the 1990s, particularly in relation to the possibilities of electronic registration? Is it the future yet? As a taxonomist with an active interest in (botanical) nomenclature, I was still a student when this arose the last time and have referred to the literature to see what happened then. Interestingly it turns out that it wasn't the first timea biocode equivalent was suggested. Minelli (2008) discusses the suggestions drafted by a commission appointed on request of the zoologist Carlo Luciano Bonaparte in regard to the so-called Strickland Code (Strickland et al. 1842), these ideas, like the 1996 BioCode, were not accepted by the taxonomic community. Perhaps third time lucky?

查看更多>>摘要:We propose a new family-level classification of caecilians that is based on current understanding of phylogenetic relationships and diversity. The 34 currently recognised genera of caecilians are diagnosed and partitioned into nine family-level taxa.Each family is an hypothesised monophylum, that, subject to limitations of taxon sampling, is well-supported by phylogenetic analyses and is of ancient (Mesozoic) origin. Each family is diagnosed and also defined phylogenetically. The proposed classification provides an alternative to an exclusive reliance upon synonymy in solving the longstanding problem of paraphyly of the Caeciliidae.
查看更多>>摘要:Much controversy still seems to surround the role of molecular data in general, and DNA barcoding in particular, within the taxonomic community. This has lead to numerous "call and response" pairs of papers, most recently Ebach (2011) and Mitchell (2011), but preceded by many other pairs, such as Packer et al. (2009) and Hofynski (2010). There have been numerous calls for a more "integrative" approach to taxonomy (Mitchell 2011; Stevens et al. 2011), which itself has generated point and counterpointpapers (Dayrat 2005; Valdecasas et al. 2008). This of course is how science progresses (although Max Planck suggested that science advances "one funeral at a time", en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Max_Planck, accessed 20 March 2011).
