Notes on the genus Ceruchus MacLeay from China, with the description of a new species (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea: Lucanidae)

Ceruchus yangi Huang, Imura & Chen, sp. nov. is described from Guizhou, China. Morphological characters of most species from China and Japan are studied and summarized into tables. Female genitalia of seven species of Ceruchus are described and illustrated for the first time. A key to males of the Palaearctic species and a key to females of the Chinese and Japanese species are provided. Natural history notes are given for some species from China.

This new species resembles E. enyo Butler, 1867 and E. rufocincta Weymer, 1911 but shows clear differences in the wing markings, ocellus pattern and the male genitalia morphology. The new subspecies can be distinguished from the nominotypical subspecies described herein by differences in wing pattern coloration. The nominate subspecies occurs in northern Colombia, and E. c. viloriai is known from eastern Peru.

The result showed that the size of proventriculus was of critical value. Internally, the main differences were the number of sclerotized appendix (sa), middle denticles (md) and lateral denticles (ld), and the structure of lateral teeth (lt). In addition, we analyzed the crickets' feeding habits and note that the the proventriculus possesses highly sclerotized projections which act in the selection of victuals. The morphology of proventriculus is closely related to feeding habits. A clustering analysis of seven features of the proventriculus was constructed. It revealed that the proventriculus had significance for taxonomy and species relationships. Observations on morphological characterization of proventricular morphology will be useful in future studies of the feeding habits and phylogeny of crickets.

The East Andes population (nominate subspecies) of this new species was previously found in Serrania de los Yariguies, Santander, Colombia in January 2003. A photograph of a specimen was illustrated as "Euptychia sp. nov." in Huertas (2004, Appendix 1, Plate 5; also listed in Appendix 3, p. 5) and this photograph was discussed withPulido in 2008. The species was also reported as "Euptychia sp. nov." in Huertas & Arias (2005, p. 75) and, following discussions with other specialists, it was reported as "Pharneuptychia sp." in Huertas & Rios (2006, p. 145). Various other new taxa have been described or have descriptions underway following expeditions in Serrania de los Yariguies (e.g. Donegan & Huertas 2006; Huertas & Arias 2007; Huertas et al. 2009; Huertas & Fagua MS). Four other specimens of E. cesarense were found at MPUJ, collected in 2004.
