Five of the new species belong to the Empoasca warchalowskii group: Empoasca (Empoasca) longa Zhang & Liu, Empoasca (Empoasca) megalophylla Qin & Liu, Empoasca (Empoasca) paragucia Fletcher & Liu, Empoasca (Empoasca) undulata Zhang & Liu, Empoasca (Empoasca) vickiae Liu, spp. nov. The other two new species cannot be placed into a species group: Empoasca (Empoasca) dendritica Qin & Liu and Empoasca (Empoasca) polyprocessa Fletcher & Liu, spp. nov. An additional 15 species and the subgenus Empoasca (Livasca) Dworakowska & Viraktamath, 1978 are recorded for the first time from China.

The checklist includes data on the distribution and relevant references for 210 species/subspecies: two Aulacochthebius Leach, 113 Hydraena Kugelann, 21 Limnebius Leach, and 74 Ochthebius Leach. On the basis of their current distribution, the established 210 species/subspecies can be classified into 28 zoogeographical categories, grouped into six complexes. The largest number of species belongs to the group of Turkey endemics (49.05 %), which reflects the local character of the fauna.

All the presented information has been summarized based on literature, museum specimens, information gathered from researchers/collectors and personal observations.^New synonyms are proposed: Imara satrapes ca-tharina (Preiss) [= Imara satrapes (Kollar)] and Castnia juturna paraguayensis Strand (= Castnia invaria penelope Schaufuss), and synonymic lists aregiven in each case. Twelve species are recorded from Paraguay, four of them are relatively common and have been previously reported from the country [Synpalamides phalaris (Fabricius), Synpalamides rubrophalaris (Houlbert), Castnia invaria penelope Schaufuss, Gazera heliconioides micha (H. Druce)]. The other eight species are much less common in collections [Imara satrapes, Castnia juturna Hopffer, Telchin licus laura (H. Druce), Ceretes marcelserres (Godart), Riechia acraeoides (Guerin-Meneville), Prometheus cochrus (Fabricius), Frostetola gramivora (Schaus), Paysandisia archon (Burmeister)]. Telchin licus laura (H. Druce) and Frostetola gramivora (Schaus) are reported from this country for the first time. Four species not known from Paraguay, but suitable to be found within, are also mentioned [Yagra fonscolombe (Godart), Castnia lecerfi Dalla Torre, Geyeria uruguayana (Burmeister), Ceretes thais (Drury)].

Detailed morphological description and illustrations are provided. The genus is similar to Abrus Dai & Zhang in external body form, and also bears a superficial resemblance to Oxycephalotettix Zahmser, in having segment X of the male abdomen with a falcate ventral process.
