Miracarus grootaerti shows the following unique or very uncommon apomorphic traits: (1) postero-lateral carinae kx on the prodorsum in contact with the pteromorphs; (2) an anterior shift of the sejugal stigmata; and (3) a rutellar microtube.

The new species is found in the Cordillera Central and is similar to P. calcaratus, P. kelephus and P. jubatus, all of themfound in the Cordillera Occidental and are presumed to be related. The new species is distinguished from similar species by having cranial crests, tip of Toe V reaching the distal subarticular tubercle of Toe IV, conical tubercles present on heels and interocular area, and males lacking vocal slits but having white, glandular nuptial pads on thumbs.

The new genus, which is tentatively placed in the family Parapseudidae, is distinguished fromother parapseudid genera by a combination of characters, including: (1) pereonites 2 to 6 subquadrate with posterolateral margins each armed with small, but distinct spiniform seta, (2) the first pleonite with anterodorsal margin lacking a distinct transverse row of small setulate setae, (3) maxilliped palp having distolateral margin of article 2 with a strongly developed spiniform seta, (4) pereopod 1 with a reduced coxal process and with anterior margin of basis armed with a strongly developed, acute, spiniform seta, (5) pereopod 2 with basis having well-developed acute spine on mid anterior margin (6) ischium of pereopods 2 to 6 having anterior margin armed with one, occasional two, well-developed narrow, acute spines, (7) pereopod 4 with dactylus, not greatly reduced, but having some adjacent setae of equal or slightly greater length. The new genus is further characterized by the presence of distinctive, blunt-tipped, crenulate, spiniform setae on the carpus and propodus of pereopods 4 to 6; similar to those reported for some species of the apseudid subgenus Bunakenia (Extensibasella). A key for the separation of the parapseudid genera within the Tribe Parapseudini that lack a distinct transverse row of setae on the first abdominal segment is presented. Akanthoparapseudes appears to share several synapomorphies with some species of the apseudid genus Bunakenia, suggesting the possibility that these two genera may represent transitional links between the families Apseudidae and Parapseudidae. Several other important overlapping characters that appear to erode the basic differences between the two families are discussed.

Subsequently, Randall and Greenfield (2004), Motomura (2004a) and Motomura and Causse (2011) described S. eschmeyeri, S. insperatus and S. crenulata, respectively, being new species from the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The East Asian endemic scorpionfish, Scorpaenopsis cirrosa, was originally described by Thunberg (1793) as Perca cirrosa, on the basis of a single specimen from Japan (probably from Nagasaki Prefecture, Kyushu). Because the holotype of the species was believed not to exist - "no type known" - (e.g., Eschmeyer 1998; Randall and Eschmeyer 2001), the latter, in their revision of Scorpaenopsis, designated a neotype for the species based on a specimen collected by a fisherman off Miyake-jima Island, Izu Islands, Japan, on 19 May 1975, and registered at the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii (BPBM 18970, 210 mm standard length). The type locality of the species therefore became Miyake-jima Island, due to the neotype designation. A photograph of the neotype was reproduced in plate 2C of Randall and Eschmeyer (2001).

In order to fix the status of Simotes quadrilineatus Jan & Sordelli, 1865, David et al. (2008) designated a neotype. Although Jan & Sordelli (1865: Plate IV: Fig. 3) depicted only one specimen, David et al. (2008) pointed out that four specimens were considered syntypes of S. quadrilineatus in the catalogues of the Museum national d'Histoire naturelle, Paris (MNHN), all collected by F. Bocourt in Siam between December 1861 and July 1862 (Milne-Edwards 1866; Bocourt 1866). Thanks to the precision of Jan & Sordelli's drawing of the ventral pattern, in which ventral blotches are clearly visible, it appeared that none of these four specimens was the holotype depicted on Plate 4 of Jan & Sordelli (1865). As a consequence, David et al. (2008) designated as neotype MNHN 1991.1819, an adult female from "Bangkok", Thailand, belonging to the series collected by F. Bocourt.
