The new species is most similar to the Indo-Pacific species Onuxodon fowleri (Smith 1955), both process a remarkably slender body, and higher precaudal vertebral counts and a longer pectoral fin, although the two latter features arc even more extreme in the former. Onuxodon albometeori sp. nov. is further distinguished from 0. fowleri by its lesser body depth, greater head width, higher counts of precaudal vertebrae, and uniformly whitish coloration only on the posterior part of the body.

查看更多>>摘要:Two new species of deep-sea anglerfishes are described on the basis of specimens collected from off northeastern Taiwan. Oneirodes formosanus sp. nov., based on one adult female, differs from its congeners in having a deep caudal peduncle (15.4% SL) and esca with a single simple, elongate, unbranched, internally pigmented, anterior escal appendage; a simple, elongate, posterior escal appendage; an elongate terminal escal papilla; and no medial and lateral escal appendages. Gigantactis cheni sp. nov., based on three adult females. differs from its congeners in having a series of unpigmented filaments at base of illicium; a black terminal elongated esca bearing numerous dermal spinules; relatively more jaws teeth with the outtermost ones relatively short. A synopsis of Taiwanese species of the suborder Ceratioidei is provided.

查看更多>>摘要:The new sardine Sardinella alcyone n. sp. is described on the basis of 19 specimens collected from the Ryukyu Islands, Japan and southwestern Taiwan. The new species closely resembles Sardinella pacifica Hata & Motomura 2019, both species having lateral scales with centrally discontinuous striae, a dark spot on the dorsal-fin origin, the pelvic fin with 8 rays, deciduous body scales, and very similar numbers of prepelvic and postpelvic scutes, scale rows in the longitudinal series, and pseudobranchial filaments. However, the new species is distinguished from S. pacifica by having lower total gill-raker counts on the first, second, third and fourth gill arches, and on the posterior face of the third gill arch (99-112, 97-115, 79-98, 62-77, and 25-31, respectively, vs. 112-137, 112-148, 95-127, 78-106, and 30-43), and greater pectoral fin (20.7-23.4% SL vs. 18.2-20.8%), pelvic fin (11.9-13.1% SL vs. 10.3-11.9%), maxilla (10.8-12.4% SL vs. 9.3-10.9%), lower jaw (11.8-13.4% SL vs. 10.4-11.6%), and pre-anal-fin length (77.4-82.3% SL vs. 72.9-79.3%) proportions.

Redescription of Tetragonuruspacificus(Teleostei:Stromateoidei:Tetragonuridae), based on specimens collected from Taiwan and Tarawa Atoll

查看更多>>摘要:The rare squaretail Tetragonurus pacificus Abe 1953 was described on the basis of a single poor-condition specimen obtained from the stomach of a yellowfin tuna collected from west of the Solomon Islands. Afresh specimen of T. pacificus was recently collected from southwestern Taiwan and its morphology and the fresh coloration are herein described in detail. In addition, a juvenile specimen collected from the southern Pacific Ocean was found in the museum collection. The species is characterized by dorsal-fin spines 10-11; longitudinal scale rows along body axis 72-80; and predorsal scales 17-20. The present specimen collected from off southwestern Taiwan represents the northernmost record of the species from the Pacific Ocean.

A new genus and species of the cod fish family Moridae (Order Gadiiformes) from southwestern Taiwan

查看更多>>摘要:Pterophycis spatium gen. nov. et sp. nov. is described on the basis of two specimens collected from shallow waters of southwestern Taiwan. The new genus can be distinguished from other genera in the family in having genital papilla separated from anus by several small scales, all rays on pelvic fin elongate, and the following combination of characters: light organ present; snout broad and rounded, without shelf-like plate; teeth absent from palatines and vomer; swimbladder with anterior elongate projections that attached to openings at rear of the skull; pelvic fin with 7 rays; first dorsal fin short-based. with 8 rays; and second dorsal and anal fins long-based, their margins not indented.

A new species of Muraenichthys (Anguilliformes: Ophichthidae) from Taiwan, with redescription of Muraenichthys thompsoni Jordan & Richardson, 1908

查看更多>>摘要:Muraenichthys longirostris sp. nov. is described based on a single specimen 206 mm total length (TL) collected from off Dong-gang, southwestern Taiwan. The species is characterized by a long and slender snout (18% of head length), unique within the genus. It is also characterized by its position of the dorsal-fin origin (positioned at 2/5 of trunk; horizontal distance from the origin to a vertical through mid-anus 113% of head length), long tail (67% TL), and vertebrae 23-41-131. In addition, Muraenichthys thompsoni Jordan & Richardson, 1908 is redescribed based on the holotype and 63 specimens from Fiji to Madagascar, north to Japan. Muraenichthys malabonensis Herre, 1923 is recognized as a junior synonym of M. thompsoni.

查看更多>>摘要:A new uranoscopid fish, Ichthyscopus pollicaris sp. nov., is described from East Asia waters around Taiwan and Japan. It can be distinguished from other congeners in having the ventral midline of the belly forming 3 prominent prolonged skin flaps, its posterior nostril oval to circular in shape, its pectoral-fm base lacking distinct blotches, and the uppermost pectoral-fin ray and adjacent interspace membrane with 1 or 2 white spots. The biogeography of I. pollicaris is discussed.

Redescription of Liopropoma aragai (Teleostei: Serranidae), with two new confirmed records of species of Liopropoma from Taiwan

查看更多>>摘要:Liopropoma aragai Randall & Taylor 1988 is redescribed based on the holotype and non-type specimens from Japan and Taiwan. Diagnostic characters of the species and the status of Taiwanese specimens previously referred to L. aragai arc reassessed. Liopropoma lemniscatum Randall & Taylor 1988, previously recorded only from the Pacific coast of Japan and the Ryukyu Archipelago, and L. lunulatum (Guichcnot 1863), previously known from Okinawa Island (Japan). Guam. Reunion, Rarotonga and Tahiti, are redescribed, both being confirmed for the first time by voucher specimens from Taiwanese waters. A detailed description of each species and a key to Taiwan Liopropoma Gill 1861 is provided.

查看更多>>摘要:A new species of the triangular batfish genus Malthopsis Alcock, 1891 is described on the basis of 9 specimens collected from off Taiwan. The new species belongs to a species group with ventral surface covered by muncrous small prickle-like bucklers. It differs from the members in this species group in having ventral surface entirely covered with tiny bucklers; principal bucklers on dorsal surface relatively tall, few in number and loose in arrangement; subopercle dull without enlarged forward-directed spine; rostral spine directed forward horizontally; 5 dorsal-fin rays and 12 pectoral-fin rays; and posterior tip of appressed anal fin not reaching caudal-fin base. Two specimens of Malthopsis tiarella Jordan, 1902 collected from Taiwan are recognized and its diagnosis is discussed.
