The plant is remarkable for its distinct vegetative morphology, while floral morphology places it as a close wild relative of C. esculenta (taro), among other closely-related species. The name given here reflects a thick, rubbery, spongy leaf blade unlike the blades in other Colocasia species known to us. The blade has exceptionally large spongy mesophyll cavities that are visible to the naked eye. Vegetative reproduction appears to be limited to direct (though shy) sprouting of lateral buds to form new erect stems, without production of side-tubers or stolons. In contrast to other Colocasia species, dense spreading colonies (clumps or patches) were not seen.

The new species can be easily distinguished from other Sinocrassula species by its basal leaves opposite, not rosulate, turquoise with apex red, flowering stems terminal, and nectar scales oblong to kidney-shaped.

Descriptions of the new species are accompanied by LM and SEM microphotographs, which illustrate their main distinguishing features. Some morphological similarity between the species of the genus Licea (L. atricapilla, L. metallica and L. iridescens) with the iridescent peridium is discussed. Some comments on the differentiation between L. pusilla and L. pygmaea are made and data on the intermediate forms between these are

It bears a superficial resemblance to B. biliranensis with a repand leaf margin, and obovoid anther shape. However, the new species is unique in reference to its conduplicate stipule, longer capsule pedicel length, and completely glabrous rhizome, petioles, and leaves. Begonia normaaguilariae was only recorded from the limestone forests of Samar Island Natural Park, Samar Island, Philippines. Following the Red List criteria of the IUCN Standards and Petitions Subcommittee, B. normaaguilariae is hereby proposed as Critically Endangered.

Meliola veebeehosagoudarii on Helicia excelsa is a new species while Asteridiella elaeocarpicola var. gadgilii on Elaeocarpus gadgili is described as a new variety. Both taxa are compared morphologically with similar taxa reported on members of Proteaceae and Elaeocarpaceae families, respectively.

The species differs from the commonly occurring G. elatum in several distinctive characters which include: smaller flower size (2.2-2.8 cm diameter), elliptic or lanceolate pseudo-sepal, glandular hairs on calyx, red petals, dorsifixed stamens, lesser number of carpels (6-8) and achene size (7.8-8.0 x 1.6-1.8 mm). Based on the morphological study of the fresh plant specimens collected from Kashmir Himalaya, here we provide a detailed description of G. rubrum and photographic illustrations of its diagnostic characters. We also provide comparison of distinguishing features of G. rubrum with its closely related G. elatum to facilitate easier field identification.

Its colour photographs are also provided and its conservation status is assessed. The new species is superficially similar to L. melataiensis, L. pusillus and L. vuquangensis in terms of leaf and fruit size. Notwithstanding, it differs from the three species in several aspects e.g. leaf apex, leaf blade covering, cupule stalk, cupule size, nut size and nut enclosure.

It resembles B. pellionioides Y.M.Shui & W.H.Chen, but is distinguishable by its hairy (vs. glabrous) stem, shorter inflorescence up to 1 cm (vs. ca. 5 cm or longer), 2-tepaled staminate and pistillate flowers (vs. 4-tepaled staminate flowers and 5-tepaled pistillate flowers), glabrous tepals (vs. spiny pilose on abaxial surface of outer tepals) and unilamellate placenta (vs. bilamellate).
