    Ice-and-snow tourism and its sustainable development in China:A new perspective of poverty alleviation

    查看更多>>摘要:The development of ice-and-snow tourism (IST) has great potential for poverty alleviation and is of great significance for promoting the sustainable development of alpine areas.However,little attention has been given to evaluating the suitability and potential of ice-and-snow tourism in poverty-stricken areas.Taking 832 poverty-stricken counties in China as samples,this study proposed an integrity suitability index (ISI) based on natural and socioeconomic factors to evaluate the suitability and potential of developing ice-and-snow tourism in poverty-stricken counties.The results showed that there are significant differences between the spatial distributions of the suitability of glacier-and ski-related tourism.The former is mainly distributed in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau,while the latter is distributed in low-altitude mountainous areas.Additionally,36.0% of the total number of poverty-stricken counties have the potential to match medium-to high-level ISIs of ice-and-snow tourism,of which 2.5%,32.9% and 0.2% are suitable for glacier excursions,ski sports and both,respectively.Furthermore,climate change and environmental protection are the main constraints on the development of ice-and-snow tourism and corresponding development strategies are proposed.This study can provide references for scientific planning and policy making regarding the sustainable development in poverty-stricken areas.

    Economic value of freshwater provisioning services of the cryosphere in the Urumqi River,Northwest China

    查看更多>>摘要:As an important component of cryospheric provisioning services,freshwater provisioning services of the cryosphere is particularly critical to human well-being and socio-economic sustainability.It is imperative to quantitatively estimate the value of freshwater provisioning services to facilitate informed decision-making for ecosystem management and economic development.This study assessed the economic value and associated changes in benefits of freshwater provisioning services for industrial,agricultural,services and domestic water uses combining cost-based method and hydrological model in the Urumqi River during 2010-2016.The results showed that the average annual economic value of agricultural,services,domestic and industrial water uses generated from freshwater provisioning services were estimated to be 1.7,4.4,9.9,and 15.7 million CNY.The annual value of snowmelt provisioning services of sectorial water uses was much higher than that of glacier meltwater due to the greater contribution of snowmelt to outlet streamflow than glacier melt.The relative contributions of agricultural,services,domestic and industrial sectors to total economic value of freshwater provisioning services were 6%,13%,32%,and 49% respectively,depending on the meltwater supply and market prices.The benefits of freshwater provisioning services from different sectors generally increased in 2010-2016,with a significant increase in the services sector.Considering the impact of changes in freshwater supply under climate change on the assessment of cryospheric provisioning services,the results emphasize the necessity of promoting industrial structure optimization and adopting resource-efficient policies.

    查看更多>>摘要:With increasing global wanning,the skiing season is shortened to different degrees all over the world.As a crucial way to ensure the sustainable development of the ski industry,snow storage has been gradually studied and applied in Europe.Covering thermal insulation materials is a key engineering measure for the success of snow storage.This study used numerical methods rather than an experimental method to evaluate the thermal insulation performance of nine snow storage coverage schemes in Harbin,Beijing,and Altay,China.We investigated the thermal insulation performance of nine snow storage coverage schemes (three natural materials and six artificial ones) using a solar radiation method and an implicit finite difference method.Sensitivity analyses were conducted,and the cost performance of schemes 5-9 were analyzed.Based on the cost and thermal insulation performance,we used schemes 4 (geotextile,straw bale),5 (geotextile,extruded polystyrene foam),and 7 (geotextile,polyurethane foam) to evaluate the snow storage effects in Harbin,Beijing,and Altay.Results showed that among schemes 1-9,scheme 7 has the best thermal insulation performance.If natural materials are used,then scheme 3 gives the best thermal insulation performance.Among schemes 5-9,scheme 5 is the most economical.The heat transfer in Beijing is higher than that in Harbin and Altay,while the latter two show similar heat transfers.The combination of meteorological conditions and coverage schemes influence the melting rate of snowpacks.The melting rate of snowpacks can be reduced with an optimized coverage scheme.The proposed methods can serve the selection of coverage schemes for snow storage.

    Social bots' role in climate change discussion on Twitter:Measuring standpoints,topics,and interaction strategies

    查看更多>>摘要:This study aims to explore social bots' role in online climate change discussions.By analyzing 491,279 climate-change-related tweets,we found that social bots were actively engaged in climate change discussions on Twitter and contributed up to 1.5.4% of related contents.Bots promote the saliency of energy,climate actions and climate strikes on public agenda.83.1% of tweets posted by social bots support climate change activism,and 16.9% support climate change skepticism.However,social bot skeptics are more strategical than social bot activists in terms of launching conversations with opposing-minded humans,and avoiding amplification of opposing voices.They are also more successful in inciting opposing-minded humans' initiative conversation and like-minded humans' amplification.Based on the above findings,we suggest cultivating individuals' media literacy in terms of distinguishing malicious social bots as a potential solution to deal with social bot skeptics disguised as humans,as well as making use of benign social bots for science popularization.
