    1788-1798页
查看更多>>摘要:Calcium salt is an important contributing factor for calcium-based biomineralization. To study the effect of calcium salt on soil biomineralization using crude soybean urease, the calcium salts, including the calcium chloride(CaCl2),calcium acetate((CH3COO)2Ca)and calcium nitrate(Ca(NO3)2),were used to prepare the biotreatment solution to carry out the biomineralization tests in this paper. Two series of biomineralization tests in solution and sand column, respectively, were conducted.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and X-ray diffraction(XRD)were performed to determine the microscopic charac-teristics of the precipitated calcium carbonate(CaCO3)crystals.The experimental results indicate that the biomineralization effect is the best for the CaCl2 case, followed by(CH3COO)2Ca,and worst for Ca(NO3)2 under the test conditions of this study(i.e.1 mol/L of calcium salt-urea).The mechanism for the effect of the calcium salt on the biomineralization of crude soybean urease mainly involves:(1)inhibition of urease activity,and(2)influence on the crystal size and morphology of CaCO3.Besides Ca2+,the anions in solution can inhibit the activity of crude soybean urease, and NO3 has a stronger inhibitory effect on the urease activity compared with both CH3COO-and Cl-.The co-inhibition of Ca2+and NO3 on the activity of urease is the key reason for the worst biomineralization of the Ca(NO3)2 case in this study. The dif-ference in biomineralization between the CaCl2 and(CH3COO)2Ca cases is strongly correlated with the crystal morphology of the precipitated CaCO3.

查看更多>>摘要:A series of undrained triaxial tests was conducted to investigate the effect of crushed mudstone with the immersion-induced degradation on the liquefaction and post-liquefaction properties, and the undrained shearing behavior without precedent cyclic-loading histories of sands containing crushed mudstone. The tested materials with a main particle diameter of 2-0.85 mm were prepared by mixing sands and crushed mudstone to reach the prescribed mudstone content defined by dry mass ranging from 0%to 50%.The mixtures were subjected to immersion under a certain stress level and were subsequently tested. In addition,one-dimensional compression tests were also supplementally performed to visually observe the immersion-induced degradation of crushed mudstone. The test results mainly showed that:(1)the liquefaction resistance, the post-liquefaction undrained strength, and the undrained strength without a precedent cyclic-loading history decreased significantly with increasing mudstone content,Mc,up to 20%;(2)even a small amount of crushed mudstone affected these strengths;(3)the above-mentioned large reductions in the strengths were attributed to the immersion-induced degradation of crushed mudstone;(4)at Mc>20%,the liquefaction resistance increased while the significant increase in the undrained static strengths with and without precedent cyclic-loading histories was not observed;and(5)the increase in the liquefaction resistance at Mc>20%may have been attributed to both the gradual increase in the plasticity and the formation of the soil aggregates among deteriorated crushed mudstone, while the increase in the specimen density did not play an important role in such behavior.

A thermodynamics-based three-scale constitutive model for partially saturated granular materials

    1813-1831页
查看更多>>摘要:A three-scale constitutive model for unsaturated granular materials based on thermodynamic theory is presented. The three-scale yield locus, derived from the explicit yield criterion for solid matrix,is developed from a series of discrete interparticle contact planes. The three-scale yield locus is sensitive to porosity changes;therefore,it is reinterpreted as a corresponding constitutive model without phenomenological parameters.Furthermore,a water retention curve is proposed based on special pore morphology and experimental observations. The features of the partially saturated granular materials are well captured by the model.Under wetting and isotropic compression, volumetric compaction occurs, and the degree of saturation increases. Moreover, the higher the matric suction, the greater the strength, and the smaller the volumetric compaction.Compared with the phenomenological Barcelona basic model, the proposed three-scale constitutive model has fewer parameters;virtually all parameters have clear physical meanings.

A bounding surface visco-plasticity model considering generalized spacing ratio of soils

查看更多>>摘要:The non-unique critical state of soils with time-dependent behaviors is a significant issue in geotechnical engineering problems. However, previous bounding surface plasticity models cannot predict accurately the non-unique critical state of soils, because the distance between the compression line and critical state line charged by strain-rate effect is basically neglected. To fill this gap,a generalized spacing ratio of soils is defined in the elasto-viscoplastic framework, and a bounding surface visco-plasticity model is formulated and verified, which can consider the generalized spacing ratio.Specifically, the generalized spacing ratio of soils reflects the distance between the compression line and the critical state line of soils with time-dependent behaviors. Then, the generalized spacing ratio is introduced into an improved anisotropic bounding surface.A new expression of the visco-plastic multiplier is derived by solving the consistency equation of an anisotropic bounding surface. In the expression,a strain rate index is pro-posed to account for the strain-rate effect on visco-plastic strain increment, and a visco-plastic hardening modulus is derived to predict the visco-plastic response of soils in overconsolidation conditions. The model is then verified through constant strain rate tests and creep tests.Notably,it can capture the non-unique critical states of soils with time-dependent behaviors due to the generalized spacing ratio and the creep rupture of soils due to the visco-plastic multiplier that considers the stress ratio and visco-plastic strain rate.

Swelling behaviors of heterogeneous red-bed mudstone subjected to different vertical stresses

    1847-1863页
查看更多>>摘要:In this study, the axial swelling strain of red-bed mudstone under different vertical stresses are measured by swell-under-load method, and the microstructure of mudstone after hygroscopic swelling is studied by mercury intrusion porosimetry(MIP).The weakening coefficient and Weibull distribution function are introduced into the coupling model of mudstone moisture diffusion-swelling deformation-fracture based on finite-discrete element method(FDEM).The weakening effect of moisture on mudstone's mechanical parameters,as well as the heterogeneity of swelling deformation and stress distribution,is considered. The microcrack behavior and energy evolution of mudstone during hygroscopic swelling deformation under different vertical stresses are studied. The results show that the axial swelling strain of mudstone decreases with increase of the vertical stress. At low vertical stresses, moisture absorption in mudstone leads to formation of cracks caused by hydration-induced expansion.Under high vertical stresses,a muddy sealing zone forms on the mudstone surface, preventing further water infiltration. The simulation results of mudstone swelling deformation also demonstrate that it involves both swelling of the mudstone matrix and swelling caused by crack expansion.Notably, crack expansion plays a dominant role in mudstone swelling. With increasing vertical stress, the cracks in mudstone change from tensile cracks to shear cracks, resulting in a significant reduction in the total number of cracks. While the evolution of mudstone kinetic energy shows similarities under different vertical stresses, the evolution of strain energy varies significantly due to the presence of different types of cracks in the mudstone. The findings provide a theoretical basis for understanding the hygroscopic swelling deformation mechanism of red-bed mudstone at various depths.

A hybrid contact approach for modeling soil-structure interaction using the material point method

查看更多>>摘要:The grid-based multi-velocity field technique has become increasingly popular for simulating the Ma-terial Point Method(MPM)in contact problems. However, this traditional technique has some short-comings,such as(1)early contact and contact penetration can occur when the contact conditions are unsuitable,and(2)the method is not available for contact problems involving rigid-nonrigid materials, which can cause numerical instability. This study presents a new hybrid contact approach for the MPM to address these limitations to simulate the soil and structure interactions. The approach combines the advantages of point-point and point-segment contacts to implement contact detection, satisfying the impenetrability condition and smoothing the corner contact problem. The proposed approach is first validated through a disk test on an inclined slope. Then, several typical cases, such as granular collapse, bearing capacity, and deformation of a flexible retaining wall, are simulated to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed approach compared with FEM or analytical solutions. Finally, the proposed method is used to simulate the impact of sand flow on a deformable structure. The results show that the proposed contact approach can well describe the phenomenon of soil-structure interaction problems.

Experimental investigation into the salinity effect on the physicomechanical properties of carbonate saline soil

查看更多>>摘要:For engineering structures with saline soil as a filling material, such as channel slope, road subgrade, etc.,the rich soluble salt in the soil is an important potential factor affecting their safety performance. This study examines the Atterberg limits, shear strength, and compressibility of carbonate saline soil samples with different NaHCO3 contents in Northeast China. The mechanism underlying the influence of salt content on soil macroscopic properties was investigated based on a volumetric flask test,a mercury intrusion porosimetry(MIP)test, and a scanning electron microscopic(SEM)test. The results demon-strated that when NaHCO3 contents were lower than the threshold value of 1.5%,the bound water film adsorbed on the surface of clay particles thickened continuously, and correspondingly, the Atterberg limits and plasticity index increased rapidly as the increase of sodium ion content.Meanwhile, the bonding force between particles was weakened, the dispersion of large aggregates was enhanced, and the soil structure became looser.Macroscopically, the compressibility increased and the shear strength(mainly cohesion)decreased by 28.64%.However,when the NaHCO3 content exceeded the threshold value of 1.5%,the salt gradually approached solubility and filled the pores between particles in the form of crystals, resulting in a decrease in soil porosity. The cementation effect generated by salt crystals increased the bonding force between soil particles, leading to a decrease in plasticity index and an improvement in soil mechanical properties. Moreover, this work provides valuable suggestions and theoretical guidance for the scientific utilization of carbonate saline soil in backfill engineering projects.

Application of multi-algorithm ensemble methods in high-dimensional and small-sample data of geotechnical engineering:A case study of swelling pressure of expansive soils

查看更多>>摘要:Geotechnical engineering data are usually small-sample and high-dimensional,which brings a lot of challenges in predictive modeling. This paper uses a typical high-dimensional and small-sample swell pressure(Ps)dataset to explore the possibility of using multi-algorithm hybrid ensemble and dimen-sionality reduction methods to mitigate the uncertainty of soil parameter prediction.Based on six ma-chine learning(ML)algorithms, the base learner pool is constructed, and four ensemble methods,Stacking(SG),Blending(BG),Voting regression(VR),and Feature weight linear stacking(FWL),are used for the multi-algorithm ensemble.Furthermore, the importance of permutation is used for feature dimensionality reduction to mitigate the impact of weakly correlated variables on predictive modeling. The results show that the proposed methods are superior to traditional prediction models and base ML models, where FWL is more suitable for modeling with small-sample datasets, and dimensionality reduction can simplify the data structure and reduce the adverse impact of the small-sample effect, which points the way to feature selection for predictive modeling.Based on the ensemble methods, the feature importance of the five primary factors affecting Ps is the maximum dry density(31.145%),clay fraction(15.876%),swell percent(15.289%),plasticity index(14%),and optimum moisture content(13.69%),the influence of input parameters on Ps is also investigated,in line with the findings of the existing literature.
