查看更多>>摘要:The actively heated fiber-optic(AHFO)technology has become emerged as a research focus due to its advantages of distributed,real-time measurement and good durability. These attributes have led to the gradual application of AHFO technology to the water content measurement of in situ soil. However, all existing in situ applications of AHFO technology fail to consider the effect of soil-sensor contact quality on water content measurements, limiting potential for the wider application of AHFO technology. To address this issue, the authors propose a method for determining the soil-sensor thermal contact resistance based on the principle of an infinite cylindrical heat source. This is then used to establish an AHFO water content measurement technology that considers the thermal contact resistance. The reli-ability and validity of the new measurement technology are explored through a laboratory test and a field case study, and the spatial-temporal evolution of the soil water content in the case is revealed. The results demonstrate that method for determining the soil-sensor thermal contact resistance is highly effective and applicable to all types of soils. This method requires only the moisture content, dry density, and thermal response of the in situ soil to be obtained. In the field case, the measurement error of soil water content between the AHFO method, which takes into account the thermal contact resistance, and the neutron scattering method is only 0.011.The water content of in situ soil exhibits a seasonal variation, with an increase in spring and autumn and a decrease in summer and winter.Furthermore, the response of shallow soils to precipitation and evaporation is significant. These findings contribute to the enhancement of the accuracy of the AHFO technology in the measurement of the water content of in situ soils, thereby facilitating the dissemination and utilization of this technology.

查看更多>>摘要:Extraction of methane hydrate from subseafloor reservoir may potentially trigger seabed slides and induce subsidence. To address the problems,it is crucial to properly characterize the phase equilibrium condition of pore hydrate and the shear strength of the soil.As one of the key constitutive components, the phase equilibrium condition enforces a constraint over pore gas pressure, temperature and unhy-drated water content.Such a constraint, however, has been traditionally ignored in analyzing the me-chanical behavior of hydrate-bearing soil.In this paper,a series of stepwise hydrate dissociation tests was performed, and the phase equilibrium condition of pore hydrate was determined, providing an effective way to evaluate the unhydrated water content during hydrate dissociation.Meanwhile,a series of direct shear tests was also conducted to explore the shear strength characteristics of the soil.It is shown that the shear strength of the hydrate-bearing soil can be significantly influenced by pore gas pressure, unhydrated water content, hydrate saturation and several other factors. In particular, the measured shear strength depends upon the initial water content of the sample, pointing to a potential problem that the shear strength could be wrongly determined if not properly interpreted.A shear strength criterion, which enforces the equilibrium condition of pore hydrate,is developed for hydrate-bearing soil,estab-lishing a link between the equilibrium condition and the shear strength. The proposed equation de-scribes well the shear strength characteristics of hydrate-bearing soils, remarkably unifying the effects of pore pressure, temperature, water content and hydrate saturation.

查看更多>>摘要:Geomaterials with inferior hydraulic and strength characteristics often need improvement to enhance their engineering behaviors.Traditional ground improvement techniques require enormous mechanical effort or synthetic chemicals.Sustainable stabilization technique such as microbially induced calcite precipitation(MICP)utilizes bacterial metabolic processes to precipitate cementitious calcium carbonate. The reactive transport of biochemical species in the soil mass initiates the precipitation of biocement during the MICP process. The precipitated biocement alters the hydro-mechanical performance of the soil mass.Usually, the flow, deformation, and transport phenomena regulate the biocementation tech-nique via coupled bio-chemo-hydro-mechanical(BCHM)processes.Among all,one crucial phenomenon controlling the precipitation mechanism is the encapsulation of biomass by calcium carbonate.Biomass encapsulation can potentially reduce the biochemical reaction rate and decelerate biocementation.Laboratory examination of the encapsulation process demands a thorough analysis of associated coupled effects.Despite this,a numerical model can assist in capturing the coupled processes influencing encapsulation during the MICP treatment. However, most numerical models did not consider biochemical reaction rate kinetics accounting for the influence of bacterial encapsulation.Given this, the current study developed a coupled BCHM model to evaluate the effect of encapsulation on the precip-itated calcite content using a micro-scale semiempirical relationship.Firstly, the developed BCHM model was verified and validated using numerical and experimental observations of soil column tests.Later, the encapsulation phenomenon was investigated in the soil columns of variable maximum calcite crystal sizes. The results depict altered reaction rates due to the encapsulation phenomenon and an observable change in the precipitated calcite content for each maximum crystal size.Furthermore, the permeability and deformation of the soil mass were affected by the simultaneous precipitation of calcium carbonate.Overall, the present study comprehended the influence of the encapsulation of bacteria on cement morphology-induced permeability,biocement-induced stresses and displacements.

查看更多>>摘要:Different sedimentary zones in coral reefs lead to significant anisotropy in the pore structure of coral reef limestone(CRL),making it difficult to study mechanical behaviors. With X-ray computed tomography(CT),112 CRL samples were utilized for training the support vector machine(SVM)-,random forest(RF)-,and back propagation neural network(BPNN)-based models, respectively.Simultaneously, the machine learning model was embedded into genetic algorithm(GA)for parameter optimization to effectively predict uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)of CRL.Results indicate that the BPNN model with five hidden layers presents the best training effect in the data set of CRL.The SVM-based model shows a tendency to overfitting in the training set and poor generalization ability in the testing set.The RF-based model is suitable for training CRL samples with large data.Analysis of Pearson correlation coefficient matrix and the percentage increment method of performance metrics shows that the dry density, pore structure, and porosity of CRL are strongly correlated to UCS.However, the P-wave velocity is almost uncorrelated to the UCS,which is significantly distinct from the law for homogenous geomaterials. In addition, the pore tensor proposed in this paper can effectively reflect the pore structure of coral framework limestone(CFL)and coral boulder limestone(CBL),realizing the quantitative characterization of the heterogeneity and anisotropy of pore. The pore tensor provides a feasible idea to establish the relationship between pore structure and mechanical behavior of CRL.

查看更多>>摘要:The classical deviatoric hardening models are capable of characterizing the mechanical response of granular materials for a broad range of degrees of compaction. This work finds that it has limitations in accurately predicting the volumetric deformation characteristics under a wide range of confining/consolidation pressures. The issue stems from the pressure independent hardening law in the classical deviatoric hardening model. To overcome this problem,we propose a refined deviatoric hardening model in which a pressure-dependent hardening law is developed based on experimental observations.Com-parisons between numerical results and laboratory triaxial tests indicate that the improved model succeeds in capturing the volumetric deformation behavior under various confining/consolidation pressure conditions for both dense and loose sands.Furthermore,to examine the importance of the improved deviatoric hardening model,it is combined with the bounding surface plasticity theory to investigate the mechanical response of loose sand under complex cyclic loadings and different initial consolidation pressures. It is proved that the proposed pressure-dependent deviatoric hardening law is capable of predicting the volumetric deformation characteristics to a satisfactory degree and plays an important role in the simulation of complex deformations for granular geomaterials.

Intrinsic correlation between the generalized phase equilibrium condition and mechanical behaviors in hydrate-bearing sediments

查看更多>>摘要:The phase equilibrium and mechanical behaviors of natural gas hydrate-bearing sediment are essential for gas recovery from hydrate reservoirs. In heating closed systems, the temperature-pressure path of hydrate-bearing sediment deviates from that of pure bulk hydrate, reflecting the porous media effect in phase equilibrium.A generalized phase equilibrium equation was established for hydrate-bearing sed-iments,which indicates that both capillary and osmotic pressures cause the phase equilibrium curve to shift leftward on the temperature-pressure plane. In contrast to bulk hydrate,hydrate-bearing sediment always contains a certain amount of unhydrated water, which keeps phase equilibrium with the hydrate within the hydrate stability field. With changes in temperature and pressure,a portion of pore hydrate and unhydrated water may transform into each other, affecting the shear strength of hydrate-bearing sediment.A shear strength model is proposed to consider not only hydrate saturation but also the change in temperature and pressure of hydrate-bearing sediment. The model is validated by experi-mental data with various hydrate saturation, temperature and pressure conditions. The deformation induced by partial dissociation was studied through depressurization tests under constant effective stress. The reduction in gas pressure within the hydrate stability field indeed caused sediment defor-mation.The dissociation-induced deformation can be reasonably estimated as the difference in volume between hydrate-bearing and hydrate-free sediments from the compression curves.
