查看更多>>摘要:The benefits of using cryogenic liquid nitrogen shock to enhance coal permeability have been confirmed from experimental perspectives. In this paper,we develop a fully coupled thermo-elastic model in combination with the strain-based isotropic damage theory to uncover the cooling-dominated cracking behaviors through three typical cases,i.e.coal reservoirs containing a wellbore,a primary fracture, and a natural fracture network, respectively. The progressive cracking processes, from thermal fracture initi-ation,propagation or cessation, deflection, bifurcation to multi-fracture interactions, can be well captured by the numerical model. It is observed that two hierarchical levels of thermal fractures are formed,in which the number of shorter thermal fractures consistently exceeds that of the longer ones. The effects of coal properties related to thermal stress levels and thermal diffusivity on the fracture morphology are quantified by the fracture fractal dimension and the statistical fracture number. The induced fracture morphology is most sensitive to changes in the elastic modulus and thermal expansion coefficient, both of which dominate the complexity of the fracture networks.Coal reservoir candidates with preferred thermal-mechanical properties are also recommended for improving the stimulation effect.Further findings are that there exists a critical injection temperature and a critical in-situ stress difference, above which no thermal fractures would be formed.Preexisting natural fractures with higher density and preferred orientations are also essential for the formation of complex fracture networks. The obtained results can provide some theoretical support for cryogenic fracturing design in coal reservoirs.

查看更多>>摘要:Photogrammetry, reconstructing three-dimensional(3D)models from overlapping two-dimensional(2D)photos,finds application in rock mechanics and rock engineering to extract geometrical details of reconstructed objects, for example rock fractures.Fracture properties are important for determining the mechanical stability, permeability, strength, and shear behavior of the rock mass.Photogrammetry can be used to reconstruct detailed 3D models of two separated rock fracture surfaces to characterize fracture roughness and physical aperture, which controls the fluid flow, hydromechanical and shear behavior of the rock mass. This research aimed to determine the optimal number of scale bars required to produce high-precision 3D models of a fracture surface.A workflow has been developed to define the physical aperture of a fracture using photogrammetry.Three blocks of Kuru granite(25 cm×25 cm×10 cm)with an artificially induced fracture, were investigated. For scaling 3D models,321 markers were used as ground control points(GCPs)with predefined distances on each block. When the samples were well-matched in their original positions, the entire block was photographed.Coordinate data of the GCPs were extracted from the 3D model of the blocks. Each half was surveyed separately and georeferenced by GCPs and merged into the same coordinate system. Two fracture surfaces were extracted from the 3D models and the vertical distance between the two surfaces was digitally calculated as physical aperture.Accuracy assessment of the photogrammetric reconstruction showed a 20-30 μm digital control dis-tance accuracy when compared to known distances defined between markers. To attain this accuracy, the study found that at least 200 scale bars were required.Furthermore, photogrammetry was employed to measure changes in aperture under normal stresses. The results obtained from this approach were found to be in good agreement with those obtained using linear variable displacement transducers(LVDTs),with differences ranging from 1 μm to 8 μm.

Clogging caused by coupled grain migration and compaction effect during groundwater recharge for unconsolidated sandstone reservoir in groundwater-source heat pump

查看更多>>摘要:In unconsolidated sandstone reservoirs, presence of numerous movable grains and a complex grain size composition necessitates a clear understanding of the physical clogging process for effective ground-water recharge in groundwater-source heat pump systems. To investigate this,a series of seepage ex-periments was conducted under in situ stress conditions using unconsolidated sandstone samples with varying grain compositions. The clogging phenomenon arises from the combined effects of grain migration and compaction, wherein the migration of both original and secondary crushed fine-grain particles blocks the seepage channels.Notably, grain composition influences the migration and trans-port properties of the grains. For samples composed of smaller grains, the apparent permeability demonstrates a transition from stability to decrease. In contrast, samples with larger grains experience a skip at the stability stage and directly enter the decrease stage, with a minor exception of a slight in-crease observed.Furthermore,a unique failure mode characterized by diameter shrinkage in the upper part of the sample is observed due to the combined effects of grain migration and in situ stress-induced compaction. These testing results contribute to a better understanding of the clogging mechanism caused by the coupled effects of grain migration and compaction during groundwater recharge in un-consolidated sandstone reservoirs used in groundwater-source heat pump systems.

Extended finite element-based cohesive zone method for modeling simultaneous hydraulic fracture height growth in layered reservoirs

查看更多>>摘要:In this study,a fully coupled hydromechanical model within the extended finite element method(XFEM)-based cohesive zone method(CZM)is employed to investigate the simultaneous height growth behavior of multi-cluster hydraulic fractures in layered porous reservoirs with modulus contrast. The coupled hydromechanical model is first verified against an analytical solution and a laboratory experi-ment.Then,the fracture geometry(e.g.height,aperture,and area)and fluid pressure evolutions of multiple hydraulic fractures placed in a porous reservoir interbedded with alternating stiff and soft layers are investigated using the model. The stress and pore pressure distributions within the layered reservoir during fluid injection are also presented. The simulation results reveal that stress umbrellas are easily to form among multiple hydraulic fractures'tips when propagating in soft layers, which impedes the simultaneous height growth. It is also observed that the impediment effect of soft layer is much more significant in the fractures suppressed by the preferential growth of adjoining fractures. After that, the combined effect of in situ stress ratio and fracturing spacing on the multi-fracture height growth is presented, and the results elucidate the influence of in situ stress ratio on the height growth behavior depending on the fracture spacing. Finally,it is found that the inclusion of soft layers changes the aperture distribution of outmost and interior hydraulic fractures. The results obtained from this study may provide some insights on the understanding of hydraulic fracture height containment observed in filed.
