    Assessing fertility preservation strategies:A scoping review

    查看更多>>摘要:Objective:To describe the various options available for preserving female and/or male fertility,taking into account both social and medical aspects,and to identify the effects of different natural products on male infertility extracted from plants.Methods:We reviewed the literature and included full-text publications in English provided by international biomedical databases,including Sciences Direct,Google Scholar,OVID,PubMed,and MEDLINE between 2016 and 2023.Search terms,such as fertility preservation,in vitro maturation,cryopreservation,plants for the treatment of male infertility,were taken from Medical Subject Headings(MeSH)and Boolean operators were used to improve sensitivity.Results:112 papers were identified in the initial search,of which 18 were excluded due to duplication.After reviewing titles and abstracts,70 papers were finally included.The main findings of this study are presented under three key themes:gametogenesis,fertility preservation techniques,and plant-based alternatives.Regarding gametogenesis,significant progress has been made in understanding oocyte and sperm maturation,with optimized conditions improving maturation rates and motility.For fertility preservation,techniques such as rescue in vitro maturation and cryopreservation have shown the enhanced outcomes,particularly in maintaining gamete quality.Lastly,plant-based alternatives,including extracts and essential oils,have demonstrated potential in reducing oxidative stress,improving sperm motility,and supporting oocyte development,thus providing a promising complementary approach to conventional methods.Conclusions:Fertility preservation is achieved in a variety of ways,including oocyte and embryo vitrification and sperm cryopreservation,and the use of plant-based treatment of male infertility.

    查看更多>>摘要:Spermatozoa are recognized as foreign cells by both male and female immune systems,leading to the production of antisperm antibodies(ASAs)when sperm are exposed to immune system due to a breach in the mucosal barrier.ASAs can be found in both sexes,though concentrations vary by individual and sex.This review examines ASAs production,their specific binding locations on sperm,and how ASAs may impair key sperm functions,including motility,viability,acrosome reaction,and capacitation.While ASAs are known to potentially interfere with sperm quality and sperm binding to zona pellucida in both humans and livestock,their impact on fertility remains debated,as ASAs are also detected in a significant number of fertile individuals.Furthermore,the practical relevance of ASAs screening in fertility assessment lacks consensus,with some findings suggesting that ASAs might even aid fertilization under certain conditions.By compiling the information on ASAs and their effects on semen quality and fertility,this review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the role of ASAs in infertility.

    查看更多>>摘要:Objective:To explore the potential therapeutic impact of an alcoholic extract derived from the sea cucumber(Holothuria parva)on letrozole-induced polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS)in adult female Sprague-Dawley rats.Methods:Sixteen female rats,aged 8 to 10 weeks,with a mean weight of(200±20)g,were randomly assigned to four groups:the control,PCOS,and two treatment groups receiving sea cucumber extract and metformin,respectively.PCOS was induced by administering letrozole at a dose of 1 mg/kg to initiate the treatment period at 60 days of age.The study spanned four weeks,during which ovarian and uterine tissues were collected for histological examination,and blood samples were collected for hormonal levels.Results:Significant decreases in luteinizing hormone/follicle stimulating hormone(LH/FSH)and testosterone and increases progesterone levels among groups treated with sea cucumber extract were observed.While no significant differences were observed in follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH)and testosterone levels,the distinctive variations in key hormones suggested a potential role for sea cucumber alcoholic extract in ameliorating PCOS symptoms.Conclusions:This research highlights the moderate efficacy of sea cucumber extract as a therapeutic intervention for PCOS,providing a novel perspective in the search for effective remedies.The observed hormonal alterations,particularly in LH,estradiol,and progesterone,underscore the need for further exploration into the underlying mechanisms and for optimizing the application of sea cucumber extract in PCOS management.

    Assessment of ameliorative effects of Moringa oleifera Lam.on epididymal dysfunctions and fertility in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

    查看更多>>摘要:Objective:To assess the protective effects of 70%ethanolic extract of Moringa(M.)oleifera leaves on fertility and epididymal dysfunctions in diabetic rats.Methods:Thirty-six male Wistar rats were divided into six groups,each with six rats.GroupⅠwas the normal control group receiving vehicle(0.5 mL of distilled water/rat/day)orally;groupⅡ,Ⅲ,Ⅳ,Ⅴ andⅥ were injected intraperitoneally with 60 mg/kg of streptozotocin once to induce typeⅠdiabetes.Then,the diabetic rats in group Ⅱreceiving vehicle(0.5 mL of distilled water/rat/day)orally;the diabetic rats in groups Ⅲ,Ⅳ andⅤ were orally treated with M.oleifera leaf extract at dose of 100,250,and 500 mg/kg body weight(b.wt.)/day,respectively;the diabetic rats in groupⅥ were administrated with reference drug glibenclamide(5 mg/kg b.wt./day).The treatment lasted for 60 days.Sperm parameters(sperm count,motility and viability),fertility index,litter size,lipid peroxidation and antioxidative defense markers(i.e.superoxide dismutase,catalase,glutathione,and ascorbic acid)in the epididymal tissue were determined.Histopathological changes in epididymis were also evaluated.Results:Administration of different doses of M.oleifera leaf extract in diabetic rats induced a remarkable dose dependent improvement in sperm parameters,fertility index,litter size,epididymal antioxidant status and also restored histopathological changes as compared to the diabetic control group.These findings were comparable with reference drug.Conclusions:M.oleifera leaf extract possesses significant antioxidant activities as well as beneficial effects on epididymal dysfunctions in diabetic male rats.
