Er Ya Yi,written by Luo Yuan in the Southern Song Dynasty,is a monograph on exegesis in naming and describing things. While naming and describing things,Luo Yuan adopted the method of'locating the meaning of a word through its pronunciation':either analyzing varied names of the named things,or naming things when explo-ring them and their names,or correcting predecessors'misinterpretations,or distinguishing the shades of meanings of loan characters. Such research experiments of Luo Yuan's have been verified by scholars of later generations. Armed with exegetic experiences in naming and describing things as mentioned in Er Ya Yi,this paper aims to dig into the contribution that'locating the meaning of a word via its pronunciation'has made to exegetic history.
