Modern times witnessed the greatest change in outlook on novels in China;novels were viewed as from an'unpretentious path'to'the best in literature'.However,such change is complex as far as individuals are con-cerned.Huang Zunsan's outlook is mixed with progress and detour,swinging between tradition and modernity,be-tween new and old.Specifically,Huang Zunsan embraced a lingering traditional perception of'entertainment'for novels all his life.While studying overseas,he started to accept exotic outlook on novels to some extent.As a patri-ot,he was deeply involved in turbulent times,his outlook on novels featured progressiveness.As a close confidant of Song Jiaoren and other revolutionaries,he had some understanding of the revolutionary function of'new novels(political novels)'.
