Examples-based Examinations to Showcase How Chinese Radicals like'日'(Ri)and'目'(Mu)Are Mistakenly Interchanged
Mistaken assimilation is a major phenomenon in the evolution of Chinese characters.Chinese radicals like '日'(ri)and'目'(mu)look alike,moreover,so the ideographicization through deformation exists,so the two radicals are easily mistaken for each other in unearthed documents and surviving ancient books when used as radi-cals.Mistaken assimilation will survive in the form of variants.This paper starts with an analysis of the possible causes of mistaken assimilation between'日'(ri)and'目'(mu)through examples,and then details the different forms and meanings of the same character at different stages,in order to reveal the interactions between the form and meaning of'日'(ri)and'目'(mu)when combined with a same morphological factor,to reveal the diversity and complexity of mistaken assimilation phenomena as well.
