From an old-style Confucian scholar to a modern university professor,Chen Fuchen underwent multiple identity transformations throughout his life, ultimately becoming a renowned educator, historian, and politician in modern China.During the late Qing Dynasty,Chen,as a local gentry in Rui'an,distanced himself from rural intellectuals by taking on the role of a school instructor. After the opening of Shanghai,he emerged as an enlightened intellectual, promoting Confucian and historical thought in both the press and academic circles.Around the time of the Xinhai Revolution,Chen stepped onto the political stage as a politician, blurring the lines between the identities of scholar and politician, and ultimately concluding his life as a professor at Peking University. The complexity of Chen Fuchen's social identity and the fluidity of social fields are somewhat typical among intellectuals during the late Qing and early Republican periods.
