Anesthesia plays a vital role in clinical surgery, which can relieve preoperative tension, maintain intra-operative life safety, and reduce postoperative pain.At present, the mainstream clinical anesthesia method is Western medicine anesthesia. Its characteristics are a wide variety, simple operation, and easy acceptance by patients. However, its adverse reactions are also prominent. For example, opioids can cause respiratory depression,constipation,addic-tion,etc.,and improper use of some anesthetics can also lead to cardiac arrest, circulatory failure, etc.,endangering the patient's life.At the same time, some preoperative stress reactions, such as increased heart rate, decreased blood pressure, increased blood sugar, muscle tension, and some stress-induced digestive tract ulcers and bleeding, are all problems that are difficult to solve with Western medicine anesthesia. The birth of acupuncture anesthesia effectively reduces the adverse reactions of various anesthetics and supplements the shortcomings of simple drug anesthesia.Now-adays,with the continuous deepening of acupuncture research, simple acupuncture anesthesia and acupuncture-drug combined anesthesia are increasingly widely used in clinical practice, with remarkable results, becoming a model of in-tegrated Chinese and Western medicine treatment in the modern medical model. Therefore, based on the current status of clinical anesthesia research, the author reviews the historical evolution, theoretical mechanism, clinical application, and development prospects of acupuncture anesthesia in recent years, based on the unique advantages of acupuncture anesthesia intervention in clinical practice, which can effectively reduce the various toxic side effects of anesthetic drugs without affecting the anesthesia effect and the quality of life of patients.
