This article conducts a systematic textual research on the name,source,producing area,use,harvesting,and pro-cessing of Carthamus tinctorius based on the records in ancient traditional Chinese medicine books,in order to provide a refer-ence for the development and utilization of Carthamus tinctorius resources.Carthamustinctorius in the name of"Honglan flow-er"was first recorded in Synopsis of Golden Chamber,while the name of Carthamus tinctorius was first seen in Kaibao Bencao, and it was also called"Huanglan"in history.The mainstream variety of Carthamus tinctorius is Carthamus tinctorius L.be-longing to Carthamus of Compositae,and it has a long history of cultivation and a wide range of planting.At present,the main producing areas of Carthamus tinctorius in China include Xinjiang,Sichuan,and Yunnan.The flowers of Carthamus tinctorius in ancient China were mainly used as dyes or medicine for the treatment of gynecological diseases,while its seedlings,seeds,or processed rouge have also been used as medicine in history.Carthamus tinctorius processed with wine was once the main pro-cessing method in history,while at present,it is mostly used as raw medicine.
