Clinical Effect of Qi-following and Spirit-maintaining Massage in Treatment of Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Its Influence on Serum 5-Hydroxytryptamine and Substance P
Objective To investigate the clinical effect of Qi-following and spirit-maintaining massage in the treatment of gener-alized anxiety disorder (GAD)and its influence on the serum levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)and substance P (SP). Methods A total of 58 patients with GAD were randomly divided into experimental group and control group, with 29 patients in each group. The patients in the experimental group received Qi-following and spirit-maintaining massage, and those in the control group received conventional massage. The two groups were compared in terms of Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS),TCM syndrome scale of stagnation of liver Qi,Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)score, and the serum levels of 5-HT and SP before and after treatment. Results The experimental group had a significant better clini-cal outcome than the control group(P<0.05).After treatment, both groups had significant reductions in the scores of HAMA, SAS,TCM syndrome scale of stagnation of liver Qi,and PSQI (P<0.05),and compared with the control group, the experimental group had significantly lower HAMA,SAS,and PSQI scores (P<0.05).After treatment, both groups had a significant in-crease in the serum level of 5-HT and a significant reduction in the serum level of SP (P<0.05),and the experimental group had significantly greater changes than the control group (P<0.05).Conclusion For patients with GAD,Qi-following and spirit-maintaining massage can regulate the serum levels of 5-HT and SP and the brain-gut axis, thereby effectively improving the clinical symptoms of anxious emotion and sleep.
