Failure analysis of buried steel gas pipelines based on mathematical statistics and text mining
To accurately understand the failure characteristics and causes of buried steel gas pipelines,1338 failure records of buried steel gas pipelines from a typical urban gas company from 2018 to 2021 were selected as the analysis sample. Then, the traditional mathematical statistics method was used to analyze the failure characteristics corresponding to pipeline laying location(including gas source pipeline, municipal pipeline, and courtyard pipeline),pressure level, external corrosion protection layer type, failure cause(including corrosion, third party damage, natural and geological disasters, failure of welds/joints/flanges),and pipe age.A total of 26 potential failure causes of buried steel gas pipelines were extracted from unstructured data by the text mining technique. The word cloud visualization was utilized to analyze the high-frequency failure causes.Meanwhile,a co-occurrence network of failure causes was established to explore the coupling relationship between different causes, and the main failure causes were identified according to the centrality of feature vectors. The results show that the medium-pressure courtyard pipelines are the focus of risk management.Anti-corrosion performance of three-layer PE is significantly better than petroleum asphalt. The total failure frequency of buried steel pipelines caused by corrosion is as high as 0.045 94 times/(km·a),which is the critical cause of failure events. The corrosion failure frequency is positively correlated with pipe age.Furthermore, the failure frequency rapidly increases from the fourth year, reaching a peak in around 19 years. In addition,a total of 8 key factors are found to be the main failure causes and also should be the focus of risk control, including soil corrosion, corrosion coating failure, stray current, lack of cathodic protection, extended service, pipeline defects, corrosion coating aging, and laying environment change. Finally, according to the characteristics of the main causes and secondary causes of the buried steel pipe, risk control measures were proposed.
